jeff hager has more on his challenge. >> reporter: after months of battling bronchitis and upper respiratory problems, chris went to a specialist, fearful he had asthma. he -- he had cancer. >> i was only blowing out 20%. he saw a lump. >> reporter: within a week doctors told him he had a rather form of trachea cancer. he learned the prognosis. >> i would be dead in six months. i have a positive attitude. everyone i've talked to, they say you have to stay positive. >> reporter: he has undergone 33 treatments but he needed a transplant. tragically help wasn't a candidate since the same anti rejection drugs would fuel his cell. the procedure has only been performed less than a dozen times. >> my insurance doesn't cover it. if you fall -- if you go to europe and fall and brake your leg, they'll cover that. if you find out you're sick and you need surgery and have this go out of the country to get surgery, they won't cover it. >> reporter: it's $450,000 at the swede deash hospital with the money required up front. now he is hoping to raise the money to have the surgery in mid-november. >> there'

that's where jeff hager picks up the story. >> reporter: as police combed this east baltimore area for a suspect in the rape, neighbors question why it provided easy access for the young girl's attack tore force her inside. police say the 13-year-old was walking down the sidewalk when the man confronted her and led her into the recesses of the empty home where they assaulted her. they have released this scatch, a black male -- sketch, 45 to 50 with a mustache and dark clothing, 5'3" and weighs about 180-pounds. >> detectives are scouring the area looking for camera, surveillance footage and asking anyone with information to contact the baltimore police department. >> reporter: a neighbor says after the attack the rapist left and the victim came to her house in search of help. she had a bloodied lip and teeth loosened. city housing said inspectors had last noticed a secured door on that structure back in july. the city tries to check each vacant home every 90 days but with 16,000 in the city, it's difficult to meet the schedule. they said he had no report that the door had been missing

jeff hager. >> all right. thank you. now we will take you from baltimore county to baltimore city. a man is shot early this morning in charles village as he left a friend's house. this case is familiar to another tragedy in this very same neighborhood. >> reporter: the shooting happened in the 2600 block of st. paul street steps a murder that shocked this quiet area about a year ago. city police say it happened around 5:30. the victim was leaving a friend's house when he was approached by a man who demanded money. the victim handed over his money but the victim was shot any way. this was feet from where a woman was shot to death during a robbery. in this case they need help finding the suspect. >> the shooting that happened was -- people were going to work, may have been walking dogs, may have heard something. we are asking them to contact the northern district. >> reporter: the city police have stepped up patrols in area to try to reassure people. anyone with information please call baltimore city police. abc 2news. >> ocean city hotel is closing early for the season because of a
