you see haifa at the top.there's a very important power plant up there the militants would love to hit. sirens went off in those towns 60 miles north of the gaza. u.s. secretary of state john kerry is condemning the hamas attacks and says the white house will continue pushing for a cease fire. easier said than done when both sides are not at the table. john hudde is in gaza city. what's the situation on the ground there like tonight? >> well, shepard, i was just kind of looking over me shoulder before you tossed to me because there was an air strike moments ago. the night skies has been illuminated a couple times here in gaza city. rocket launches and then air strikes like the one i just mentioned. that continues in the wake of this cease fire agreement that broke down. israel accepted. for seven hours they held off on firing at hamas, starting at 9:00 a.m. local time, and over that period of time hamas fired 70 rockets at israel. so, after about seven hours israel had enough and launched several missile strik

claiming 90% success in neutralizing the threat from missiles from gaza and those aimed at tel aviv and haifadoes sth work? the first phase is detection. any time rockets rise up and head toward israel, high tech cameras and radar systems and computers start looking at them, figuring out how big they are, how fast they're moving and importantly where they are headed. because simultaneously, the analysis and targeting phase is entered here. that means if these are headed off into the sea or into rural areas where they won't hit anything, they just let them go. they don't care. let them fall to the ground, but if they spot one of them headed toward buildings or a city where people would likely be hurt. then the destruction phase is key. that means that these computers and radar systems reach out to batteries of missiles on the ground in israel and they launch them automatically sending these missiles out here that are each about ten feet long racing toward the incoming threat. each one of the defensive missiles has 24 pounds of high explosive on them. when they get close enough, they blow up, o

deep into israeli territory and threaten civilian population like tel aviv, capital of jerusalem, and haifa. israelis will look for those. more importantly, i think this sparked the ground invasion. israelis intercepted 13 hamas commandos, who dug a tunnel and intent to siege a kibbutz, small community in southern israel. that was sort after red line for prime minister benjamin netanyahu. that is when he launch ad ground invasion. i think as david lee miller noted what they're trying to do right now is to find those tunnels, to prevent incursions into israel. and, as has been reported so far, eight of those tunnels have been found. the challenge will be to destroy them to make sure they can not be used again. jenna: we esee the pattern repeat themselves. tensions between israel and hamas. they light up over the years and some sort of a resolution and everything calms down again. the pattern repeats. is this different than what we've seen over the past several years? do you think it will have a different result? >> i'm not sure that it will. i think at the end of the day the israelis don't w

and at that point in time there were hundreds of rockets coming into haifa. 600 people, israelis were hospital there in the trauma hospital where i had visited. i can tell you, if it wasn't for the iron dome, you'd have much more serious casualties across israel today. so israel is going to take this opportunity as long as the rockets are being fired at it to try to go in and get the tunnels and suppress those launchers, but they can't stop until the rockets are no longer being launched, the rockets supplied by iran to hamas. for that to happen, you know, it's going to take a negotiated ceasefire and that's the attempt right now that our secretary of state is involved in. >> do you believe the israelis are overreacting right now? they are facing a lot of international condemnation. you see these awful pictures, the kids who have been killed in gaza, the civilians who have been made refugees. has israel gone too far in your opinion, mr. chairman? >> oh, no, no. i think that's a mischaracterization. i have seen on the ground in these situations the way in which israel goes to the utmost
