haines had an irreverent style and the ability to cut through p.r. spin, whether interviewing business leaders or lawmakers. he was one of cnbc's first anchors and hosted a daily program here at the new york stock exchange. our susie gharib worked side-by- side with haines in the early days at cnbc. earlier today, she recalled some of her fondest memories of mark. >> susie: mark haines was a reporter's reporter. he was always interested in getting the story, digging for information, and the ib it sounds cli shea but he was speaking the truth. for many years he and i co-anchored a show at cnbc and i remembered once we were interviewing a stock market bull and mark's questions were so negative and very bearish. the next day we had a market bear on the show, and mark sounded so upbeat and bullish, and afterwards i said mark, what are you doing? and he had this devilish look and laughed and said i just like to keep my guests off balance. that was mark, unpredictable, clever, smart. and a superb reporter. he was also funny, fun to work with, and he was my

6th and 7th along folsom, but the traffic in the last 15 minutes finally is being left through one hain of it past the fire scene. this was one urban blaze that came awfully close to roaring out of control. plumes of thick, black smoke and flames shot from the roof of this 48-unit residential hotel when the first alarm went out at 5:24. residents say they were evacuated. many say smoke alarms did not go off. by 6:30 there was a fourth you are large. dozens of fire units swarmed to the scene. but when timbers started falling, there were fears for the firefighters' safety and the chief made the call to vac waits. -- to evacuate. >> they ordered the evacuation and everybody know when's the horn sounds you come out of the building. >> they then attacked the fire with ladder trucks as it spread to a neighboring business and severely damaged six flats in an adjacent apartment building. an army of firefighters stayed on through the evening. 110 in all. there were rumors of a missing firefighter, but in the end all were accounted for as several residents described how they think the fire starte

. >>> and finally today, our condolences to the family of mark haines, a pioneer in the cable televisiony, and our colleague here at cnbc, where this program is produced. mark passed away suddenly this week at the age of 65. in addition to being a professional and a gentleman, he was my friend. we launched the show "squawk box" together in 1995. we were proud of delivering something new and valuable to viewers. mark fought for the individual investor, and fought hard. he was not afraid to poke holes in your story or in your interview. if it didn't make sense to him, he told you so, because he spoke for his viewer. he was a mentor and a hero. his highest point of his professional career i believe came on september 11th. he delivered the tragic news of the terrorist attacks without emotion or hysteria, but with calm and accurate information. but every day he popped around to different stories and exchanges and made business news interesting and fun. we are all heartbroken here at cnbc. our thoughts and prayers to his family. all miss my friend and my colleague mark.
