kenny center's involvement in haiti, we have been working in haiti since 2002.d who have met with the human rits struggle and in 2002 that went to our partners in health which i believe most people are now familiar with. she was a voice for her work on the right to health. not only was she doing grndbreaking hiv/aids treatment at a time when it was considered difficult to do so in resource poor settings but she was doing so from a human rights perspective and really over the years what that has meant is working in partnership with the ministry of health to build its capacity to do a job. haiti has a constitutionally recognized right to health. the rfk award begins a partnership, a long-term partnership and the take on the social change goals of our partners and engage from washington. over the years we have looked at the international community, the u.s. government, the international financial institutions role in haiti at times when there was no money going to the government and really looking at what the impact of the international community interventions were

organization in haiti, and they're managing a camp of 60,000 people in haiti. so he volunteered for his organization to support us, to train in their camp first. so we just completed the training and the certificate ceremony for 415 haitian women, train the trainer in haiti, and that one camp, and it was so well received that they had literally -- literally had to turn people away. they wanted to help so bad. and our hope is now that some n.g.o. and organization will pick this up and help us. our goal was to train 20,000 people in haiti in one year. but, of course, now it's more difficult, but we can still do it, but we're going to have some help to do it. i'm going to close with this, and i know you're very glad. each of us, no matter who you are, you can make a difference in someone's life. you can help a neighbor. you can help yourself and your family, or you can help the business you're working in, just develop a family plan for your family. if you got kids or grand kids at school, if you got most families now, mother and fathers work, and if you're at work

coca-cola launched a program in haiti for fruit juices. the field of development is certainly much broader today i believe then it was a wild back. in terms of private foundations, i think they play a very unique and incredibly important role. they can often take tremendous risks. they can work very very long time in a very focused area like getting a big breakthrough like an aids vaccine. if you look at 38 million people around the world with hiv-aids the way we are going to solve that problem over time is prevention and treatment and hopefully a breakthrough in technology like a vaccine that can be used more cheaply and more effectively. they play a very unique role but that actually highlights that the public sector should be doing more and should be doing more effectively. we can also invest in science and technology. we can also take risks and stay focused. we should also be incredibly oriented around using our resources in a results-oriented way and trying to get as much leverage as we can into every investment we make so we are not
