let's bring in new york congressman hakeem jeffries, chair of the house democratic caucus and member of the congressional progressive caucus. congressman, great to see you. appreciate it so much. the chair of your progressive caucus said some 50 members will vote against the bipartisan infrastructure bill this week if the budget deal isn't also brought, that much larger spending deal isn't also brought to the floor. what's your sense on that? are you going to be joining your fellow progressives in balking if you don't get everything you want here? >> well, we're scheduled to have a caucus meeting tomorrow at 5:30, which will continue the family discussion that we've been having as to the best pathway forward to get both the bipartisan infrastructure agreement over the finish line along with the "build back better" act. we've always maintained from the very beginning that they're going to proceed on parallel tracks because it's necessary both to fix our crumbling bridges, roads, tunnels, our parents, our mass transportation systems to ensure that everyone across the country has access

leading off our discussion tonight's democratic congressman we hakeem jeffries, congressman jeffries thank you for joining us tonight, what is your reaction to what we are looking learning in bob woodward and robert costa's book. about paul ryan's interaction with donald trump. and his preparation for dealing with what's he considered to be at minimum a mentally unstable incoming president? >> well it's extraordinary, but the challenge in dealing with donald trump is that not only is he a malignant narcissist, but he of course is a psychopath, any pathological liar, at the same. time that is pretty complicated for an ordinary citizen. it's incredible to have to deal with someone of that nature. as the president of the united states of america. the challenge that the republican's have had. is that they accepted donald trump for who he was. and continues to be, in part because for the acquisition and maintenance of raw power to accomplish their own policy in the case of paul ryan, that's cutting taxes for the wealthy, the well off, and the wall connected. and in the case of -- that is

i remember helping hakeem jeffries get his gas mask bag open, he just going to get it open.hen i ripped it open, somehow it damaged the mass, so we had to get him another one. i remember being worried that we wouldn't get open for him in enough time. >> to remember the conversations the two of you are having? rep. allred: we were very cool in the moment. i think we were both angry. i was certainly angry that this is happening. and i think there were a lot of people around me who were, ifo responsible for, i guess you could say. and so we were just trying to make sure that everybody around me was ok and those who were worried. at that point i took off my suit jacket, which i had never done on the house floor been without my suit jacket. it was pre-much deciding, whatever happens is going to happen. so i sent a text to my wife saying, since -- wife, whatever happens, i love you. she sent me back, i love you. that meant to me, i don't know what will happen here, but i want to make sure i send this. at that point, things were starting to deteriorate quickly. we have furniture. >

i remember hakeem jeffries, or maybe it was liz cheney, i think it was liz, actually stood up and said, somebody has revealed the location of this safe room. don't do that. everybody by this time was starting to take phone calls from the media and that kind of thing. shortly thereafter, i remember hakeem saying, we are going to wait for them to clear the capital, then we are going to go back and finish our business on the house floor. when he said that, it struck me. i cannot believe we were going back to that house floor. when i was in there, there was glass shattering and gunshots. but i realized quickly why we needed to go back and get the job done, but it was a little traumatic because the last thing i wanted was to go back there. from that point on, i stayed in constant contact with my kids, in between doing press calls. i remember standing near mondaire jones. i was next to the two of them much of the time. not the whole time, but a lot of the time, and just comparing notes and checking in with each other. >> when did you first see the photographs of you in the gallery and jason

let's get into it with congressman hakeem jeffries, chair of the house democratic caucus and thrilled to have him on the show this morning. you just heard me go over this long laundry list of things to do in the house that's going to have a disproportionate impact of black and brown people in this country. so i want to start with police reform. what went wrong there and is our hope gone in passing some sort of police reform in the house or senate? >> well, the majority of police officers i've encountered here in brooklyn and queens and across new york city and the nation i believe are hardworking individuals who are in the community protecting and serving, but it cannot be denied that we have a police violence problem in america, a police brutality problem in america and a police use of excessive force problem in america that disproportionately impacts black and brown communities. and so we can't simply wash our hands of the issue at the congressional level notwithstanding the fact that senate republicans have clearly abdicated their responsibility to rise to the occasion and to try t
