hal rogers of kentucky complained on a letter on his website, "discretionary cuts must be brought to an end." with house republicans unable to pass a seeming appropriations bill on their own suddenly looked like an open for the senate to broker a compromise and pass its own bipartisan bill and that, in turn, would put pressure on house republicans to let that bill come to the floor for a vote and pass mostly with democratic votes. such an arrangement would allow congress to avoid a debt limit showdown and maybe shut off the sequester. that all came crashing down on thursday when senate republicans filibustered their appropriations bill on a 54-34 vote with only one republican, susan collins of maine joining with the democrats. the congressional republican crackup is on hold for you and the october 1st government shut down is still looming. we want to bring in white house correspondent at buzzfeed.com. malia political reporter for "washington post." crystal ball, former co-host on "the cycle." and chris wilson and contributor to the conservative online forum ricochet.com. so, thanks,

it is not hal rogers or patty murray's fault that we cannot get appropriation bills passed. the problem is that there is a huge difference in judgment about what is achievable on the part of the budget committee. that same judgment produces a different result in the appropriations and ways and means committee. i think that is a fundamental flaw which has to be dealt with. i also think that process alone is not the problem. my friend archie the cockroach said once -- he said, what matters is not the system that you have. what matters is what you do with whatever system you happen to have. and i can tell you, if tommy thompson and i were running these committees today, i know what we would do, because i know what we did in the good old days back in madison. in madison in those days, we would fight like hell from 9:00 until 5:00. when we adjourned, we would go to the bar. the democrats would sit at one table and the republicans would sit at one table, and the reporters would sit at the bar, with their typewriters, and they would type their stories. they would come to our tables

hal rogers hit the nail on the head yesterday when he said and i quote, sequestration and it's unrelate particular and ill-conceived discretionary cuts must be brought to an end, unquote. american workers continue to face hurdles in providing for their families and i'm gravely concerned about the effects of sequestration on my home state of georgia. last month, furloughs began for ins air force base and others across georgia. this just won't affect the hard-working people at bases, but have an effect on the local economies. the furloughs which began last week will take $50 million out of the economy around the robbins air force base alone. multiply that with the economic catastrophe across military bases across georgia and the country. you begin to understand the effects of sequestration on small businesses and on the economy. but instead of working together to come to a bipartisan solution to the sequestration fiasco, this congress is continuing an agenda to make life worse for american families. i urge all of my colleagues to support this commonsense amendment to promote job creation.
