and haley barbour said this as a warning to his own party. this is the danger of potentially misinterpreting these results. it will be fascinating to watch if the republicans do win and ascend in power how they walk that line of not considering this a mandate for republicanism but instead sort of a check on obama and on the specific issues like susan was saying in their message: spending, taxes but not for the party as a whole. they're going to have to walk that line very carefully. >> lehrer: is it your reading, susan, that barbour is speaking for a majority of the republican leadership when he's saying let's not get carried away with these results. >> i think haley barbour is one of the most respected republicans around among other republicans. definitely a leader. with the weakness of the party chairman michael steele that's even more the case. he's a very respected voice. i think we expect to see him make a presidential bid. yes, i think when he's speaking, he's heard... his voice is amplified with some of the republicans who will be taki

voters in south carolina elected republican nikki haley as that state's first female governor. she ran with support from sarah palin. and she will be the nation's second indian-american governor along with louisiana's bobby jindal. haley replaces scandal-plagued governor mark sanford. >> in texas they have re-elected republican governor rick perry to an unprecedented third full term. harry defeated former houston mayor bill white. during his campaign perry linked white to president obama. and appealed to voters' anger about the economy. >> and in california, jerry brown is going back to the governor's mansion. the 72-year-old democrat defeated republican meg whitman, who spent $160 million on the race. most of it her own money. brown also served as california's governor from 1975 through 1983. >>> president obama and the democrats focused on younger voters before the election. but our exit polls show the majority of midterm voters were 45 years or older. just an estimated 11% of tuesday's ballots were from voters age 29 or younger. exit polls also show 28% of the voters conside

significant gains, most notably in south carolina where voters elected pro-life, mama grizzly nikki haley as the nation's first indian-american female governor and in new mexico where susana martinez becomes the nation's first hispanic woman governor. for the first time in state history, alabama elected two women to congress, including terri sewell, the state's first black congresswoman. some key house and senate races have yet to be determined, but several well-funded, big name candidates suffered losses. and well-known gop tea party member sarah palin released a video this week saying, this is our moment, meaning conservative women and men. but the power of the palin endorsement is being questioned. the former vice-presidential candidate endorsed eleven senate candidates including four women, but only kelly ayote won. oh, will american women and men gain or lose by having slightly fewer women in congress? >> if we can agree that both parties and the american people have done better with increases of women in congress, it follows up that the reverse is also true. >> i don't think america

it started with really dramatic testimony from haley schilling.e actually have a little timeline that will run you down through some of this. haley schilling was one of the women attacked by ingmar guandique in rock creek park. she came in here and told jurors that she had never been so scared in her life. she described the scene, she described how ingmar guandique leaped on her back and grabbed her by the throat and tried to knock her down into a ravine. and then the next witness was kristy wygan. she too was attacked by ingmar guandique in rock creek park and she described an almost identical m.o. about how ingmar guandique followed her on this remote trail and then leaped on her when she wasn't aware that he was right there and knocked her down into a ravine. and then a woman named amber fitzgerald testified, and she was important because she believed she was attacked on may 1st, 2001, which was the very same day that chandra levy disappeared. take it back, not attacked, but stalked and followed, and she looked behind her on that trail, remote

you may want to look at a governor like haley barbour or tim pawlenty. just to give you my view of obama triangulation, and it's going to be difficult for him because the key party is going to hold the republican leadership to a very rigid line. i'm not sure how far across the aisle obama is willing to reach in order to reach a compromise. other than the mandatory bills on spending, i look forward to very little getting done over the next two years and the president retreating into foreign-policy as an area where he has more leverage and independence. >> knowing you will never vote for any of them, is there any hope the republican candidates you think looks better tomorrow than they might have six months ago, given the issues we're talking about? >> sarah palin looks better than she did six months ago. i can't wait to have her nominated. go girl. i like the fact it was a woman they gave them some much trouble. on a serious note, i agree with chris. voters are frustrated with washington and will be frustrated with washington in two years. one of the big d

nikki haley's victory in south carolina. russ feingold's defeat in wisconsin. then when they flashed at one one point that john dingell was losing, i don't think it's been called, but they flashed on the screen he has been losing, that got a big cheer. a long-time lion among the democra in the house. i just ha ju very interesting talk with one of the young rising stars among republicans in the house. that's kevin mccarthy of california. one of the so-called young guns. newshour viewers will recall perhaps that recently i think within the last couple of weeks ray suarez talked to him and eric cantor. he has sort put an interesting spin on this. he referred to this as a generational changeing election. he's talking about all the candidates who we're seeing win tonight who have no or very little electoral or governing experience. many of them young. many of them coming, he thinks, with pressure ideas. he says this signals a rude awakening for seniority in washington. i said rude awakening for both parties? he didn't want to go all that way. he said yes really, bot

i would like to ask john haley, director of transit, to provide a snapshot of the season service including the championship games and the parade. >> thank you. mr. chairman, members of the board, we have to organizations taking people to different events that culminated on november 3. our long season got us to the playoffs. in a different way, perhaps, we were able to build on a regular season plan and meet the extraordinary demands, and participate actively in the celebration that took place on november 3. we did have a plan for the regular game season. we had extra service every day. i want to point out to the board we expanded the service, both in terms of extra rail service and extra staffing during both the division playoffs, the league championship, and the world series. i also want to point out the one major element that we operated under, if you will, or operating axiom. we will not impact our regular service. we will be able to meet the giants demands at the same time we hit our usual service. that became a challenge, if for no other reason than with the differences in time. all o
