al jazeera reports from the town of haley. >> after more than two weeks of very dense firefighting here at the beaver creek fire there is good news this morning. this fire is now 30% contained. that is up just 8% or 9% over the past couple of days. one reason is the humidity has come up, the temperatures are dropping, and there is not nea nearly the wind. on the north, north of sun valley 30 miles away, they're trying to stop it from you running into the wilderness. it has been a tough summer in idaho, it is second only to alaska where 1.2 million acres have burned. right now the nation as a whole is at level 5 firefighting preparedness. every available resource in the field fighting fires, it's the highest level of firefighting. that has not happened since 2008 to put that in perspective. the firefighting season is far from over. many months of firefighting still ahead. >> thank you. the west is expecting quite a bit of rain today, though. the question is will that help with all these wildfires? we hope so. let's check in with rebecca stevenson. >> meteorologist: as the storms work the

john koth took these dramatic photos of the massive flames and joins me on the phone from haley, idaho. looks like you were close to the fire when you took those photos. tell us about that. >> we are located in the subdivision right about 1/4 mile from the ridge you're seeing there. my family evacuated, i came back to check on the neighbor's house, watch ours and i suddenly found myself with several other firefighters and they were looking for a better view. we wound up on the roof. that's where those photos came from. dramatic fire-fighting. can't praise the firefighters enough for their super human efforts to stop what you see there when it got down to the river below it. >> what was it like to see it and to be there in person? it's just unbelievable looking at your pictures. i can't imagine being there. >> i think i've never been in a war zone, but i guess that would be a good description of it. there were four helicopters with hoses that were sucking up water out of ponds nearby. they were flying directly over the house. there was fire coming from both ends at that point. there was

john blackstone is in haley idaho tonight. john? >> bob, wind gusts up to 30 miles an hour today have been pushing this fire toward ketchum and sun valley where residents have been warned they should be ready to evacuate at short notice. this fire has been fast moving and unpredictable. the flames have now burned across more than 100,000 acres in a part of idaho famous for its scenery and known as a playground for the rich and famous. the pine-covered mountain sides are so rugged. fighting the fire from the air is often the only option. firefighters have been working on the ground to protect hundreds of houses close to the fire lines. more than 1800 houses have been evacuated. many of those are vacation homes. so far only one house has burned, but the risk remains. this fire is explosive. >> it is explosive. and that's what we've seen. i mean, when a fire grows 28,000 acres in one burn period basically in 24 hours, that's incredible fire growth. >> reporter: tracy weaver is with the fire management team. the same thing that makes th

tonight where more than 700 firefighters are battling a wildfire roaring through the mountains near haley, ketchum, and sun valley. today the sun valley ski resort turned on its water cannons, which are normally used to make snow, to protect lodges and chairlifts. the beaver creek fire grew by 15 square miles overnight and has now blackened more than 144 square miles. at least 1,600 homes are under mandatory evacuation orders. and from wildfires out west to another problem in the south, we bring in meteorologist david bernard from our miami station wfor. david, what is happening? >> reporter: good evening, jeff. wouldn't you know it, where we need the rain we're not seeing it and where we don't need any more rain we're getting too much of it and that's in the southeast. first we have a stalled front across the coast and that is the focus for a lot of shower and thunderstorm activity, but adding to all that is tropical moisture coming from the a weak tropical disturbance in the southern bay. that doesn't look like it's going to develop anytime soon. it will bring a lot more rain to the are

nbc's miguel almaguer is live at base camp in haley, idaho, where one of the biggest fires is still burning. miguel, good evening. >> reporter: lester, good evening. base camp is a city within a city. firefighters from all across the country rotate in and out of this place 24 hours a day. but when they are on that mountain behind me, they all have the same goal, protect property and lives. today the buffalo river crew from arkansas clears the way near the front lines in idaho. this team of 20, men and women, spend 16 hours a day clearing brush, creating containment lines, it's back-breaking work. >> as the crew boss, it's my responsibility to make sure my guys are safe. >> reporter: ryan green has fought fires in 16 states so far this summer. this month he slept in his own bed twice. >> why do you do this work? >> because i love it. it is the hardest work i've ever lo loved. >> reporter: the buffalo river company joined 1,800 firefighting personnel, battling the beaver creek fire, the most dangerous in the nation. crews are making progress. only one home has been lost here so far. the johns

he has pulled back now to safer grour ground in nearby haley, idaho to join us. miguel? >> reporter: lester, good evening. all the fires in the west are feeding on drought-like conditions and is the perfect fuel. fire loves the deep terrains, it explodes out of control when it hits a hill like this. so much of this hill was covered with waist-high debris and brush. when it hit this fire, it took off. tonight, idaho's beer creek fire is the most dangerous, most explosive blaze in the nation, with no sign of slowing down. it's moving in multiple directions, 160 square miles swallowed by flames so far. >> this fire has been very active and very aggressive. it's a perfect firestorm. >> reporter: the inferno, just a mile away from 5,000 homes. >> just an extended drought. it's been hot, it's been dry. >> reporter: firefighters call this an erratic and aggressive blaze, whipped by 30-mile-an-hour winds. 1200 firefighters are on the ground. more resources on the way. crews on the front lines have had little sleep. this back-breaking work is going around the clock. across the we

joining me now, from the site of that wildfire in haley, idaho, miguel, when do firefighters think they get this under control? >> alex, they still don't know the containment date. it's certainly going to be several days. it's only about 8% or 9% contained. that containment line will -- firefighters are certainly doing all they can. there are some 1,200 men and women who are on the front lines, they are tackling this blaze not just from the ground, but from the air. it is a stubborn and massive fire. it's certainly a big fire that crews are trying to wrap themselves around. it's going to be -- the next 24 hours is going is to be critical because wind speeds will be gusting at close to 20 miles an hour. the winds ignited this blaze and made it multiply in size. it was sparked by lightning. but in the last couple of days, it really has exploded. those fuels aid by that wind has really taken off. some 5,000 homes are threatened today. thousands of people have been evacuated and of course as you may know, this area is partly home to some celebrities, there are some exclusive area of homes h

t we're joined from haley, idaho. >> reporter: the goal of any fire fight is to protect lives and propertydanger. multi-million-dollar homes are directly in the path of a 1,000-acre fire that's been burning for nearly two weeks. crews from around the country are trying to save this playground of the rich and famous known for attracting vacation celebrities like tom hanks, bruce willis, and arnold schwarzenegger. academy award winner richard dreyfuss, whose family is from here, tweeted "thank you firefighters and be safe. houses aren't worth lives." but they are worth a lot of money. in fact, insurance companies are actually hiring private firefighters to protect certain people's homes. they work alongside the regular firefighters who number more than a thousand. >> a lot of them used to be firefighters for an agency and now they're working for insurance companies. as long as they're coordinating and working with our people, it's one less house that we have to try to protect. >> at the opposite end of the welsh spectrum, the red cross is helping those in need. >> many people are from differ

cnn's dan simon is in haley, idaho, with more for us.rning, dan. >> reporter: good morning, carol. we are at the base camp. this is a pretty vast operation. we've got 1,200 firefighters battling this blaze. and we're told by officials that there is a potential for this fire to get even worse. as you said, 100,000 acres. as always is the case with wildfires, wind is such an important factor. but crews are optimistic that they might get help from mother nature today. in terms of the fire-fighting effort, 1,200 firefighters, a lot of aircraft. you got the dc-10 dropping fire retardant. you got helicopters dropping water. hopefully that will make a difference, as you said, this is an affluent area where many celebrities have homes. obviously they want to do the best they can to protect some of these large homes. at this point, we should tell you that the damage actually has been fairly minimal, just a few outbuildings basically that have burned down. the people feeling the brunt seem to be the local businesses. obviously this is a tourist ar
