so, susan, what does haley bring to this campaign? >> well, right now to talk to ali's point and her book on women running for the presidency is her foreign policy experience. and i think that will be a very important thing she brings to the table right off the bat, probably one of the dividers between her and trump on the issue of ukraine. and how republican primary voters feel about that as well as donors. but the other thing that nikki haley can potentially bring to the republican party as a whole is expanding the republican primary voter base. and that will be critical for her to do if she wants to edge out on the margins. can she fight the center right republican voters that haven't been voting because of donald trump? they were turned off by him. they didn't vote in 2020 or 2022. but now maybe they're willing to come back and look at a republican candidate like nikki haley who does have the center right value. >> so, jonathan, that is a balancing act in certain ways for nikki haley. how does she separate herself from donald trum

but who is nikki haley as a person and as a politician?itical correspondent katelyn bird joins me now. you dug deep >> tell us about her early years. she grew up a child of immigrants, a first generation american. her family was sikh in a very small town of bamberg. i've actually been to in south carolina. how did that shape who she is today? >> well, the fact that you've been there says a lot, because a lot of people might blink and miss bamberg, south carolina. so growing up there in the late 1970s and '80s, nikki haley was born an outsider, even in her own hometown. i think especially about an example that we included in that piece about her entering the little miss bamberg beauty contest with her older sister. at the time she enters it, she wears this white, ruffly dress, she sings the song. and then the pageant organizers in hailey's retelling split the children up into white children and black children and nikki and her older sister are standing there in the middle, completely out of place, and nikki haley is left holding a beach bal

how does nikki haley confront, navigate, or sidestep the trump factor? >> it is a challenge and will be a challenge for every one of the potential candidates as they go forward. one thing is clear, you cannot run for a gop nomination in 2024, without running against donald trump. there is a never trump faction but that is only about 10% of the party. there is an always trump faction , a group who will walk through flame for him and follow him anywhere, including an independent candidacy against ron desantis or joe biden. 28% of republicans would vote for him, which would put a democrat in the white house. the largest portion of the party is maybe trump. those are people who voted for him twice, supported him as president, but are interested in an alternative who looks more like a winner and carries less baggage. that's the group she is going for. geoff: you did some polling recently and you found republican voters who don't necessarily dislike donald trump but think other people dislike donald trump and think he is not electable and that's why they are l

that was nikki haley. she's in, and what do we think? also jump in. >> that's a good question. nikki haley, the daughter of immigrants and the former south carolina governor, and as you mention the former u.n. ambassador under trump is now the second declared candidate after trump to get into this 2024 race. and there is a real strategy here. she gets to get media attention and press attention, and she also gets the ears of donors who are trying to weigh where they're going to be putting their support in this upcoming primary that could be crowded with people ranging from former vice president mike pence and mike pompeo to of course former president donald trump. but there's also senator tim scott. he's the senator from south carolina who is also very popular in the state. and nikki haley is beloved in the state from her time as governor. she's popular there with constituents, but so is tim scott. so i think part of this is making a her home state as one of her colleagues there is expected to get in the race as well. >> good point, jumpi
