this is a scene in his hometown of haley, idaho, tonight, where there is jubilation that an american family will have their son back. in washington, and indeed across the country, there are also a lot of new questions about the deal that won his release. swapping out five taliban commanders who were being held at guantanamo. does the u.s. now negotiate with the taliban? exactly how was sergeant bergdahl captured in the first place? and how dangerous are these taliban leaders who have been freed? our team has been looking for answers and we begin tonight with jim miklaszewski at the pentagon. jim, good evening. >> reporter: good evening. and all the early joy and celebration over bergdahl's release has indeed being crowded over several growing controversies. in haley, idaho, today, preparations well under way for bowe bergdahl's homecoming, five years in the making. >> i think bowe is very fortunate he is from haley. i can't think of a better place to heal. >> and at the military hospital in germany today, doctors reported bergdahl in stable condition, but suffering from malnutrition

. >> i'm from educating he, haley idaho. >> with critics calling him a traitor. >> saturday everybody was so excited and happy, and monday all the negative press that came out, and accusations kind of put a damper on things. >> a damper that persuaded organizers to cancel a welcome home event. a small city already joan run by journalists they say the event would have drawn too many people, both protectors and supporters. in a statement they said in the interest of public safety, the event will be canceled. haley a town of 8,000 does not have the infrastructure to support an event the size it can come. the decision comes after emails and phone calls calling him a deserter, and said several travelers got in touch,ens caling plans to visit. they also received complaints saying the town shouldn't treat bergdahl as a hero. still, many people in haley say they are happy for his family. >> we have been standing with beau, we have been standing strong, and we can stand strong with beau for a while longer. >> we also spoke to a few hotel managers that said they had not received any complaints

residents of his hometown of haley, idaho have been anticipating his release for five years, our jimere, it's been a long time coming from the people in haley, idaho, how have they been preparing for that moment. >> reporter: it goes without saying the spirits remain high here in the town. the yellow ribbons, balloons, signs all over the town. but the questions here even now are growing about bergdahl's release. here in sergeant boe bergdahl's hometown of the hailey, idaho it's hard to find a tree without a yellow ribbon. >> the ribbons, bumper sticksers and bracelets, we have never stopped. and we are eighth to breathe once he's home here in idaho, we can breathe again. >> reporter: at jane's artifacts on main street. they are giving the balloons away. >> we want yellow balloons, plastering this town. >> reporter: for all of the excitement over sergeant bergdahl's eventual return hering the controversy surrounding his freedom continues to grow. >> we have our boy back and we are going to let everyone else deal with the politics of it all. >> reporter: for some those politics whether

he's in germany, where nic robertson joins us and ed lavandera is in his hometown of haley, idaho. the administration said they were concerned about sergeant bergdahl's acute health problems. what do we know about his medical condition? he's in stable condition but his condition requires hospitalization they say. they are focusing on his dietary and nutritional needs, essentially what he was eating while in captivity wasn't enough so that's what they are to discussion on. also his psychological recovery, that's what's being worked on as well. he'll be questioned and talked to as well. does he have any useful actionable military actions. but it does seem to be his diet, what he's eating, his basic physical health. that's the biggest concern at the moment. >> ed, you're in his hometown. very tight community. what's the reaction there to his release? >> reporter: well, simply here ecstatic. i've been coming here for five years and it struck me there's a lot of signs that were put up five years ago that said standing with bowe or other yellow ribbons. over the course of five years thos
