haley ott joins us with the latest. good morning. > reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the epicenter of friday's massive earthquake was high in the atlas mountains, about 50 miles from marrakesh. some rural villages there where buildings are built into the mountainside made of clay and mud brick have been completely destroyed. new satellite images show the extent of damage in morocco after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake brought down buildings killing and injuring thousands. this man says friday's quake struck while his family was at the dinner table, killing one of his young sons. rescuers are still sifting through the rubble in a race against time to find survivors. the quake triggered landslides that have blocked roads cutting off vital access to hard-hit remote villages in the mountains. the moroccan government has set up tents for those who have lost their homes, but survivors say they need bread and water, and that aid has been far too slow. in marrakesh, those displaced by the quake slept outside for the third night in a row fearing aftershocks. >> we need help becaus

haley ott joins us now with the very latest. haley, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. some communities that were devastated by the earthquake last friday are criticizing the government's relief efforts as time to rescue any remaining survivors is running out. as the search for survivors of friday's deadly earthquake intensifies in morocco, it's a race against time and dangerous work. >> if there is a shock, then new buildings can collapse. so it is a real safety issue for the rescuers. >> reporter: hundreds of survivors are at a makeshift hospital set up by the moroccan military. though for thousands of other residents there's heartbreak. this family walked through what's left of their home while mourning their 7-year-old son and brother who died in the quake. in the shadow of this damaged building, tourists now walk the streets again. some say they're not afraid of aftershocks. >> i don't think it's going to affect the tourism industry. i think people will still come here to visit. >> reporter: it's a differen

haley ott takes us inside the numbers. >> reporter: gas prices surged in august and continue to climb upward. aaa says the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is up $0.14 last year. >> originally i was going to put 20 in and then i saw that and i only put 10 in. >> reporter: gas and oil prices were a big reason why overall implosion -- inflation rose. when you strip away energy costs, the latest report shows prices for many items we buy are even, what is measured as core inflation. >> the core rate has come down. we saw it go down from 4.7% annually to 4.3% annually so that has been a good improvement. >> one place americans are seeing improvement is at the grocery store. prices are rising at just 3% and some items are dropping. milk is down 3.5% from a year ago. bacon has dropped more than 6% and eggs have plummeted 18%. since march of last year, the federal reserve has been raising interest rates to bring inflation down. the board meets again next weekend is expected to hit the pause button. >> it is unlikely that the fed will raise interest rates next week. the reason
