democrat congresswoman haley stevens is joining us, and a member of the problem-solvers caucus. thank you for being here. i wanted to talk to you about where we are with this shutdown. and the republicans are looking at spending bills that the senate won't sign, and so at this point, should americans simply expect that there is going to be a shutdown? >> i don't want to encourage a shutdown, and i believe it can be avoided particularly if we adhere to a plan to pass a continuing resolution, 30 days, 45 days, and this is something that the speaker of the house even said that he'd be interested in doing. we all know that a shutdown is just economic damage. it is economic collateral. we have working families relying on day care assistance that is going to expire, and we have food security issues. we have the running of the airports and the hard men and women who make it work for so many americans, and i don't want to see those people furloughed, and so if we can do the continuing resolution, and buy some time, and stop with the perfunctory actions of the individual spending bills,

joining us now is michigan congresswoman haley stevens. she served on former president obama's auto task force, and of course is from michigan, and that's a state very impacted by all of this. thanks for being here, congresswoman. this is a first, all of the big three striking at the same time. what's your biggest concern? >> well, you can file it in the air how historic this is and the energy, and i'll tell you, my concerns are for the workers. i don't think the american people understand how difficult it is to stan on a picket line, the courage that it takes. you just heard from one uaw member that your reporter on the ground interviewed, they are making sacrifices, but they are making sacrifices for the greater good. so the concern here is are workers going to finally get dealt in. we are so proud that the auto industry, because of the hard work of uaw members has rebounded from the great recession period. there's certainly record profits, there's incredible innovation. we saw our way through a pandemic, and now workers deserve their fa

joining me now is congresswoman, haley stevens, a michigan democrat, who supports the strikers. congresswoman stevens, they are officially on strike. it happened moments ago. it is historic, and you are standing in solidarity with the uaw members. how significant is the strike? >> well, you've got that right. i am absolutely standing alongside the hardworking men and women of uaw. i want to thank gabe with being out with the workers striking. i think that amanda story is incredibly significant, a woman who just got off her shift and has now joined the picket line saying, i want a better deal. the american people have to understand, it's not easy to strike. it is nerve-racking. a lot is on the line, but the outcome of this has got to be a better deal for the workers and that is what we are seeing played out. that's why we're in this position, and i will be standing by uaw through and through. >> does the izadi, and i am glad that you mentioned the human element of this, as we talk a lot about manufacturing and what it means to the economy and areas around how it will impact the b
