[applause] thanks to doctor berry professor of economics and political science at the university of california berkeley and the author of the new book hallof mirrors, the great depression the great recession and the uses and misuses of history. now it's time for today's question period and we have a number of questions piling up. so let's begin. so professor, it seems some days we are in a constant cycle of crisis and it seems in your book you describe 80 years apart and historic magnitudes yet from the 19 '80s stock market crashed to the bond market, to the 98 currency crisis and so on it seems the cycles are speeding up and the volatility is getting greater, the magnitude is getting greater and the impact of the financial system on the real world is getting stronger so for most listeners there is the sense that it's getting out of control. what confidence do we have that we can break out of the cycle of the crisis? >> the last sentence of the book is something to the effect and i am paraphrasing myself, though we we handled the greatest financial crisis in 80 years suggests we will experience another in considerably less than 80 years,
