. >> i want to start this morning with nbc's hallie jackson notice inside the convention hall. we are talking about another trump campaign unforced error, and republican in-fighting. and this thing is almost over. >> reporter: jose, i've got to set the scene of where we are and what we just saw. we're actually over at the different hotel, not the convention center. we're in downtown cleveland. you see all these people in cowboy hats and texas shirts behind me, members of the texas delegation. there was a breakfast happening. ted cruz appeared. and i will tell you what. if last night was a remarkable moment on the convention floor, this was another remarkable moment. ted cruz addressing these delegates, some of whom a vocal minority, i might say, were pushing him very hard on why he would not endorse donald trump. so ted cruz delivered some remarks. he essentially said that he didn't regret what happened. he wouldn't take back what happened. and i'm paraphrasing here. he defended his actions last night. he pointeded out he congratulated donald trump, but insists he needed to wat

joining me now from our bureau in washington is nbc's hallie jackson who is covering the trump campaign. hallening to you. i'm sure we're hearing from donald trump but with a more b subdued tone. >> reporter: we are. it's more subdued than other shootings in the past, other national tragedies. trump out with a statement early in the day and a video statement he released on facebook, clearly scripted, clearly crafted in order to strike a very deliberate tone. he talked about the need for inclusiveness but also talked about the need to restore law and order in this nation and emphasized focus on law enforcement as well. for trump this has been over the last 24 hours or so, a sign of his growing influence in his circle of advisers. people like his top aide paul manafort, his son-in-law jared. >> is the trump campaign giving you an indication how he might tackle these issues throughout the election? >> he hasn't yet, for example, gone after the president or hillary clinton the way you have seen some do, including one of his advisers blaming hillary clinton for the divisiveness in this country. thi

hallie jackson inside the hall.morning's top stories from sheinelle jones. good morning. >> just six weeks after the orlando nightclub massacre, police in florida are on the scene of another deadly club shooting. nbc's kerry sanders is in ft. myers. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. gunfire broke out at a club known as club blu. two people were killed. at least 16 wounded. tragically, this was teen night so some of the victims are as young as 12 years old. the authorities say at this point there are no indications of terrorism. the club has released a statement that says in part, we are deeply sorry for all involved. we tried to give teens what we thought was a safe place to have a good time. there was armed security as well as full security inside and out. but as you point out, this is yet one more tragic shooting at a nightclub. it does not appear to be terrorism related as was the case in orlando where 49 people were killed and 53 were wounded just six weeks ago. sheinelle? >> so sad. tha
