hallie, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, erica. this is the first time the former president has spent time in public since announcing he has cancer. churchgoers described today's service at the baptist church as quiet and low key. president carter has been teaching sunday school there for years, although today he simply attended the worship session. he didn't make any public remarks. his niece tells me he looked really good today, and the church pastor adds "carter seemed as happy and as spirited as ever." the congregation prayed for president carter and we're learning that carter is still set to teach sunday school next week for the first time since revealing his cancer diagnosis. typically when carter teaches, some 300 people can attend. normally it's just a few dozen. carter revealed wednesday he will be going through treatment here in the atlanta area for his cancer, although he has not said what kind it is. carter has written before about his family's battles with pancreatic cancer which killed his father, his three siblings.

go down to hallie jackson also on this story for us. two things that jumped out from the press conference, one as we were just discussing, the employment history and the situation that was con fronted this. speak to that in conjunction with the reporting you've been doing. if you want to comment on the other pertinent information about the murder itself, the news director saying there was an earlier hit on air appearance by the reporter around k5 10 in the morning. was possible this killer took from that that he could come do this attack. >> let's start with that second peace. they last typically for about two hours. you'll see the news crew go out, do a hit in the first half hour, another in the second and then in the second hour of the show as well. that's what he was speaking to. it's possible that somebody may have been able to get to that location. again, we don't know where vester flanagan was coming from. we do know where the shooting happened is about 45 membershin south of wdbj in roanoke. a couple things do jump out, maybe som

nbc's hallie jackson joins us live now from atlanta.iously we're talking about a former president but a lot of people will be curious how his team proceeds ahead given his health, prior medical issues as well. >> reporter: and his family history, too. remember that his father, his brother and two sisters -- i believe two brothers and a sister died from pancreatic cancer which is highly unusual and something that president carter talked about in his recently published book discussing the fact that they couldn't find another american family that had such an impact from pancreatic cancer. to be clear, we don't know what kind of cancer jimmy carter has. we may find out more about his condition as early as next week. but he said he will be rearranging his schedule to go through treatment. he's got a busy schedule. carter has been one of the most active ex-presidents and just in the last few months, he's traveled overseas to monitor an election. he's gone on a book tour for his 29th book, the one that just came out on "life at 90." he is not

. >> nbc's hallie jackson joins me now from moneta, virginia. hallie, i'm curious what authorities have been able to uncover about flanagan's day and even the days prior to this attack. he was fired two years ago. and i'm wondering what kind of contact, if any, did he have with the station or with other people. >> reporter: people at the station, we've learned, had been told if they saw flanagan come on to wdbj property, they were to call 911 immediately. what police have said here in southwest virginia is that it appeared as though his life was spiraling out of control. those anger issues that you touched on had been brought up by folks who have worked with him in the past, dating back 15 years or so. he'd been hired and fired at a news station in tallahassee, florida, back in 2000. confrontations happened with flanagan there. and the day he was dismissed from wdbj, there were violent outbursts recorded on videotape. and the person photographing that was adam ward, one of the victims of this shooting. so we talk about the day he was dismissed.

nbc's hallie jackson joins me now from atlanta.allie, this has been the most remarkable former presidency in that he has done everything from negotiating middle east peace and all the things that he won the nobel prize to working with habitat for humanity and even after that surgery on a mass connected to his liver last week he immediately came right back to the carter center and came right back to work. >> reporter: yeah, he was back resuming his normal schedule within just two days of that operation last week, andrea. and as you know later this year he was set to go with rosalyn his wife to nepal to build houses for folks impacted after the earthquake. very active, even though he is 90 years old he's not slowing down. that will play a part in what kind of treatment president carter will go through. it's not clear yet what kind of cancer he has. he has only revealed he will be rearranging his schedule to get treatment here at emory. we know a carter has a family history of pancreatic history. father and three siblings died from it

hallie jackson is up there. how is the crowd, how's the mood? >> pretty posh crowd. the campaign estimates about 800 people, many paying $100 at the front when they check in to come through to this fund-raiser essentially. it's a beautiful estate here in massachusetts, about a half hour outside boston. everyone is enjoying hors d'oeuvres on the lawn and cocktails. he'll be taking questions from the media. we expect that to happen maybe in the next half hour or so. you will hear the band playing now. that will stop presumably when trump gets here. he'll be speaking at the podium, but tonight won't be the last we hear from him in norwood, at least. he's going to be on sarah palin's program. she's got this new political talk show. donald trump, jeb bush, ted cruz will all be featured on there. palin went on a kind of a discussion today of what she called these gotcha questions to trump about his religion, about his favorite bible verse, whether he liked the old testament or new testament. that could be one of the questions trump gets tonight along with this question of

joining me is hallie jackson. take the news about schumer's opposition? >> it wasn't unexpected alex. at this point senator schumer the most influential, probably the top-ranking democrat to come out in opposition to the deal but the white house was pointing to a number of other democrats coming out in support of it including kirsten gillibrand from new york. even though we are seeing house democrats saying they will vote potentially or at least they support a vote to block the deal, it doesn't appear as though schumer is what you might call -- his defection will be enough to tip the scales. schumer said this deal is almost the worst of both worlds. you're eliminateing sanctions but not doing enough to get them from getting a nuclear weapon. president obama has a different take. listen to what he said earlier in the week. >> you don't negotiate deals with your friends you negotiate them with your enemies, superpowers don't respond to taunts. superpowers focus on what we need to do in order to preserve our national

hallie jackson, thank you. >>> i want to bring in dr. azar. let's talk a little bit about this. melanoma, we usually think of it as a skin cancer but in this case it's internal. it's on the brain. i know that president carter will have four radiation treatments three weeks apart. what's the prognosis for his future? >> to your point, luke. there are a minority but there are a certain percentage of cases of melanoma where they have gone away from the primary site which is the skin. you know, obviously in most cases we presume it starts in the skin. if it mass mess stasis sized in his case, which is considered stage iv, according to the american cancer society, the five-year survival is 15% to 20%. ten-year is 10% to 15%. >> in terms of his age, how does someone who is about 90 years old going to turn 91, how do they react to treatment like this? >> obviously that factor into prognosis as well as the patient you're dealing with. the medicine that he got, you know, the side effects can vary. some which are not life threatening can be quite difficult to get through. bone and joint p
