let's bring in hallie jackson, she's covering the trump campaign for us. and nbc's luke russert, who was just there with paul ryan and asked him the question about the new polls. hallie, let's start off with already this morning donald trump being described as flip-flopping on another issue, this regarding using a pollster. let me play what he said to our chuck todd not long ago. >> i don't have pollsters. i don't want to waste money on pollsters because, you know -- i don't want to be unreal. i want to be me. i have to be me. you know, we have enough of that in pollsters telling everybody what to say and everybody being controlled by the lobbyists and the donors. >> that was then, this is now, why is this significant. >> because it tells us a couple of things about where the trump campaign's head is at, at least at the moment as they make this turn into the general election. so, number one, you look at who trump has hired. not just a pollster but a long-time veteran republican strategist, tony fabrizio, somebody who has ties to rick scott from florida, ma

hallie, you were there as paul ryan was talking to the media. he really did seem to stay on message, a message of positivity and one of looking forward, but we didn't hear a lot of substance about the meeting. >> reporter: and that was intentional from speaker ryan. he specifically did not want to get into what types of policy issues they had, even though he did acknowledge repeatedly the differences between himself and donald trump talking about the, quote, honest discussion they had about where they simply don't see eye to eye. you talk about the buzz words for speaker ryan, you're right. positivity, encouraging. we heard him say that at least ten times during that press conference, a signal that ryan is moving towards trump. it's not a full endorsement, at least not yet. and he also talked about the need for those core conservative principles. that is something that sources tell us has been very important to paul ryan. i want you to listen to what he had to say just a couple hours ago here in the capitol. >> there are policy disputes that we

as you saw there, hallie jackson is with the cruz campaign. and also today andrea mitchell had an interview with hillary clinton. the cruz campaign is settling in for what could be a long unpleasant night after a wild day. i wondered about his refusal to answer your question. i guess it's logical, it was such a damning and i think in this case, probably reasonable response to having your father accused of having something to do with killing president kennedy, to be angry, but he didn't seem to want to answer the next question, if you're damning him as a pathological liar, are you going to hold his hand in the air in cleveland, when he wins the nomination? should he do so? >> reporter: and this is a question that cruz has not definitively answered ever since the last time we were talking about a tabloid story trump was talking about, involving his wife. so it is not new for cruz to not answer this question. you heard him on "meet the press." in fact, over the weekend, after chuck todd asked him, i think, nine times the question, the campaign is

joining me, nbc's hallie jackson. hallie, it's looking tough. 15 points today. there was a sense maybe they could bring back the wisconsin magic, has not materialized so far. glenn beck on stage trying to work that magic. calling for a fast. what's the thinking there? >> listen, i think there's a sense within the campaign based on conversations i just had with the senior adviser that they know tomorrow is not going to go the way they want it to go. that it will probably be a tough night for them. that it's going to be possibly a single-digit loss. there's pushback against the idea that the margin will be as big as our nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows, which is a 15-point lead by donald trump right now. but there's a sense that cruz will hang on until there is no longer, as he put it in that interview we did, a viable path to the nomination. that means trump hitting 1237. why? why stay in? as was phrased to me, you never know. the idea within the campaign is that trump is such a wild card, there's no reason, they believe, for cruz to get out of this race

hallie, good morning, what do we know?: hey, there, jose, you can see news media already lining up readying for that press conference in which trump is set to detail donations made to veterans charities. this all happened after -- remember he skipped that debate and instead held a competing rally to raise money for different veterans groups. he claimed he raised some $6 million but since then there have been questions about how much money really was raised, where that money really went, to which groups specifically. trump over the weekend, over the memorial day weekend, promising to give a full accounting of those details and that's what we expect to hear from him inside. typically during press conferences the candidate will also take questions from reporters so we may hear more about this independent candidate talk. the idea there's some sort of independent challenger out there who is waiting in the wings to come and try to take it to trump ahead of the general election. something trump is lashing out about preeveryone i'

hallie, thanks, as always. let's bring in ari who has been following several of these financial stories volg trump that had been developing throughout the day, last night as well. so let's start with this new information about donald trump asking that his vice presidential candidates release their taxes. bizarre considering he has insisted he will not be doing that. is that impressive asking your vp to release theirs? >> it's unprecedented to take the position the taxes don't matter at the top of the ticket but will matter for the running mate. our own chuck ed todd went backd forth with ben carson who has been part of trump's team. here is their exchange. >> reporter: one of the things many vettors do, you want to see tax returns, personal disclosure forms, things like that. are you asking for those things during this vetting process? >> i would say that the normal vetting procedures would be under way, all the things that are normally asked for. nothing outside the normal. >> reporter: got you. normally that

hallie, it's good to see you. this is a traditionally conservative state that should be friendly to ted cruz, so what's the problem for him there? >> reporter: donald trump, jose. it's been ted cruz's problem for months now. he's not going away. so for cruz, indiana is becoming a make-or-break state. you look at those poll numbers. privately i'm told by campaign aides that the race is tighter than our poll numbers show, which is that cruz is trailing trump by 15 points. dig into the numbers a little bit here. even if you reallocate the second choice voters, people who support john kasich, who is not competing in this state. cruz still doesn't have enough based on this polling to overtake donald trump and nearly 60% of likely republican voters in indiana believe that that so-called alliance that was unrolled a week ago by these two candidates backfired. they disapprove of the idea that kasich would all but concede indiana and cruz would all but concede oregon and new mexico. a couple of issues for cruz in indiana.

. >> nbc's hallie jackson is following this from washington. so, hallie, is this really viable? what are you hearing about this potential third-party candidate? >> it is such a long shot, kristen. even when there were other candidates in the race, the ability for example, of john kasich to be able to overtake donald trump, let's say at a contested convention, was really considered a long shot so this is even more of a concern. you've got places like texas where the balloting rules, you just can't get on the ballot. it would have to be some kind of a write-in campaign. but, kristen, what i think this shows is that within a certain strain of the republican party a very deep sensibility, a core sensibility that donald trump is wrong for the party and wrong for america. it's these never trump folks that are insistent that trump cannot and should not be the nominee. but at this point it looks incredibly late to be recruiting people into the system. for example, nbc news confirming that mitt romney has reached out to people like ben sasse, people like john kasich to see if they would
