hallie jackson with trump in florida right now. and vaughn hillyard in arizona.arrett, starting with you, a lot of people think of texas as pretty red. how did this get to be such a competitive race, and which way do you see it heading this weekend? >> reporter: that's a great question, ari. look, this is a race where you've had the o'rourke candidacy which a lot of people wrote off early which has raised a ton of money, gotten a lot of tension. i'm with ted cruz today in victoria, texas, very conservative part of the state. and cruz is running on essentially a two-part strategy here. he is trying to hug president trump, make the point of what they've been able to accomplish in two years of a republican majority, talks a lot about the tax cut, a lot about rolling back regulations. then it's about disqualifying beto o'rourke and trying to paint him as too liberal for the state of texas. i've bounced back and forth between tehese two campaigns an two candidates and they're talking to almost entirely different e electric trots here. one of the thing that cruz says o

nbc chief white house correspondent hallie jackson joins me. hans, you saw what happened there yesterday. what exactly went down? and do we think more of it is coming? >> this is the san vsidro border. what happened yesterday is they took these barricades and put them across. what they did was try to prevent foot traffic from using these car lanes to breach the border. as it is right now, the border is open. yesterday started off with a march towards the border. a couple of hundred of those migrants living inside the shoulder tried to cross over a bridge. they were stopped by federal riot police from the mexican government. you did see some skirmishes. that's when they went down to that dry riverbed, which did have some water coming through it. the strempench was overpowering like raw human sewage. they tried to get closer. what they wanted to do was surrender. they wanted to file their asylum claims in person. they didn't get there. at some point there was tear gas fired. then the migrants went up and over and tried to find a different spot. i

our chief white house correspondent hallie jackson traveling with the president for the g20. michael youly joins me now, senior foreign affairs correspondent for "politico." the timing of the special counsel's announcement a bit curious to some because if you'll recall, the special counsel several months ago did the same thing announcing an indictment right before the president of the united states was scheduled to meet with the president of russia. what, if anything, can we glean from the timing? >> reporter: i think we can only speculate. you're right that it was a major theme before that summit in helsinki this summer, there was a big indictment, and you know, that really -- that timing did feel extremely loaded. the president was going there for his first really major bilateral meeting with president putin. people weren't sure what kind of deals he might be willing to strike, and then mueller dropped an indictment that was just packed with really overwhelming convincing detail showing that russian intelligence, military intelligence operatives had interfered in the 2016 e
