i'm chris jansing in for hallie jackson. tom winter, rebecca roife, prosecutor in the manhattan district attorney's office and "washington post" reporter darren fahrenthold and msnbc contributor. rebecca, is this just the beginning? what's going on in that office today? >> so it's a little hard to know from the outside, but it was a significant indictment and there are a couple of clues in the indictment that make it seem this is the beginning, the tip of the iceberg, that's what the prosecutors are hoping at this point. if you read the indictment and again, it was sort of framed as fringe benefits but i don't think anybody thinks of a million-dollar apartment on riverside drive or private school tuition as fringe in any way. this was a long scheme to defraud the tax authorities. you read it and think who is this designed to enrich? is it really enriching weisselberg? no, this is enriching somebody else, and who? former president trump obviously. so there are other economic i haves executives mentioned in that indictment and

that day, and anybody around donald trump should be called as witnesses, and then adam schiff told hallie jackson that the committee cannot wrap up the work by this year, and it is going to stretch into 2022 which is an election year, and this is the thing that gave the republicans a lot of concern, and this is the thing that the republicans gave up when they blocked a bipartisan commission. >> that is absolutely right. this is definitely going to go into 20222022, considering it i almost august when they return, and this committee is ramping up, and hiring staff. they will spend august and september laying the groundwork of the investigation, and they have a lot of work to do, and they are at the beginning stages. this is absolutely going to go into the midterm election year. especially if they want to talk to former president trump aides who have been defiant in any investigation involving the then president, and former president. so there could be a lot of legal battles that persist as well. geoff, this is the very beginning of this story that is going to be probably a very long one. >

chris jansing in for hallie jackson. we start in washington, with nbc's sahil kapur on capitol hill, monica alba at the white house for us, and msnbc contributor anna palmer, founder of punchbowl news. good to see all of you this morning. sahil, more republicans voted for this than expected, including the senate so-called grim reaper, mitch mcconnell. but it does still have a way to go before reaching president biden's desk. what happens next? >> that's right, chris. this infrastructure deal passed a key test vote in the senate yesterday, but it faces a long and treacherous road to president biden's desk. now, it is in good shape in the senate. the fact it got 67 votes including 17 republicans who are bought into this process and who seem to want to get to an outcome here. it could happen as early as this weekend if senator chuck schumer sticks to his threat of making senators work late into the night and through the weekend to finish this up. once it passes the senate, that's when things get very tricky because this bil
