>> reporter: that's what they're trying to determine, hallie. just an update, the two police officers you referenced that were shot following this incident when the vehicle came to a stop apparently those two officers are in, quote, stable condition. i don't know how serious their injuries were. back to the explosive, as far as the potential explosive, they are obviously going to look at things in the car. we've seen this on a number of these types of incidents where somebody will try to have something that's either improvised in the car or something they could throw, how effective that might be, whether it is an actual device or whether it is something just to try to slow down police as they investigate because they have to ok into those types of things, all of that is unclear. that's all going to be part of the investigation. the fact that the fbi is taking this over indicates that there is a national security component to it, that there is a federal nexus, police and officials in new orleans made it quite clear this is not an accident, this w

i'm tom llamas in for hallie tonight.are live here in los angeles surrounded as you can see by the destruction from the palisades fire. this right he used to be a three-story office building and you see what's left of it now. absolutely nothing. but we are coming on the air tonight with a note of cautious optimism. firefighters have made major gains in their battle to slow this fire, but the winds here are set to whip up again to extremely dangerous levels. a flood of resources are now pouring into the city. of firefighters from mexico and canada, desperately needed equipment as well. and that war from above is ramping up. this was the scene throughout the day. look at this. one aircraft after another dumping water and fire retardant. the governor saying they are flying as many planes as air traffic controllers will allow. officials also saying they expect the list of dead and missing to grow. entire neighborhoods here still sealed off. these are the long lines of cars packed with residents desperate to get back to see if

hallie, good to be with you. the police superintendent of new orleans calling this very tragic, as you said, that resulted in ten people being killed, several dozen others transported to area hospitals. she also called it very intentional. this happened around 315 in the morning on the very popular tourist hotspot of bourbon street, she said. a man in a pickup truck intentionally drove around barricades, so it's not clear what kind of barricades those were, and then went at a very fast pace down bourbon street. quote, trying to run over as many people as he possibly could. he eventually crashed and police say, started shooting at officers, striking two officers who we've learned are in stable condition. a federal law enforcement official tells nbc news that the suspect is believed to be dead at this time. they also say that the fbi is looking into this, investigating this as a potential terrorist event. the fbi is taking over the investigation and revealed that they found several improvised explosive devices near
