hallie jackson, we're going to check back in with you.ant to pick up on a point, which is the voices on the stage last night. and contrasting that with the gop convention where largely you had donald trump's children, business associates up there making the case, serving as character witnesses. i think that's a challenge for him going forward. but u that creates a challenge. when you look at the line up on each side, i don't think there's much of a competition in terms of who is going out there and ground they can cover and the constituencies they can go forward with. both of them have high negatives. both donald trump and hillary clinton have high negatives. there's obviously a calculated decision by their campaign, by the hillary clinton campaign that you cannot win a presidency only by going negative. you have to make an affirmative case for who you are, what you bring to the table. they believe that's what they did last night. look, we have talked to the clinton people. they don't think in 100 days you changed 30 years of conceptions

but to the report moments ago from hallie jackson, we have gop veteran steve schmidt here with us in the studio. what do you make of that piece of reporting? >> well, it's not surprising. matt scully is one of the people you would turn to if you're a republican campaign for president, worked under john mccain, george w. bush speechwriter, one of the preeminent speechwriting talents. apparently what happened is he submitted a draft of the speech that was well reviewed, well received by the campaign. that was the last they ever heard of it. and the speech that melania trump gave last night bore no resemblance to tspeech that was submitted by matt scully. >> what hallie was able to report, what we know of that draft, it did not include any of the portions later found to be plagiarized. at least in this telling, it's post-matt scully, pre-melania trump walking up to the podium. so still no explanation as to how this remarkable thing ended up happening. >> some insinuations that matt scully wrote it, therefore he must have been the plagiarist. that's not the case. this is one of the best

our hallie jackson was right there. she's in the new york delegation that ted cruz mentioned as being enthusiastic. hallie, what did you see from your vantage point? >> we were over in the texas delegation, savannah, where there were wild cheers for ted cruz. almost every single person in that delegation on their feet for the entirety of the cruz speech. however, toward the end of the speech when cruz said vote your conscience, that moment you just played, even in the texas delegation, we heard some chants of do it, say it, meaning endorse donald trump. we then came over to new york, which had been booing. there were chants of endorse. we found representative peter king. representative, tell me what you thought of that moment with ted cruz. >> to me ted cruz showed america what he really is. he's a fraud, he's self-centered and disqualified himself to ever being considered for president of the united states. he took a pledge to support the nominee. the ted cruz that i've known unfortunately he cannot be trusted and he's

hallie jackson here in cleveland and katy tur is at trump tower in new york. katy, let's talk about this controversy over melania trump's speech. she told matt lauer she wrote the speech with as little help as possible. what are your sources inside the trump camp telling you about how the speech was drafted and the word for word similarities to michelle obama's '08 speech. >> i've been on the phone all day and almost every one of them is trying to push back on this idea that there was any plagiarism going on with melania's speech. they're adamant these were her words, her feelings, how she felt about her husband, how she feels about division for the country and it is her back story. they are pushing back on the idea that it could have been lifted from all places from a michelle obama speech, especially since they have been so anti the clintons and anti the obamas all this season. others acknowledge this does not look good and they're saying there's somebody in the campaign, whoever was involved with this speech that needs to get up and say "this is my fault, i

i guess she didn't do very well. [ cheers and applause ] >> let's go to nbc's hallie jackson.tion from the trump campaign, regarding the e-mail leaks, as well as the reaction to day one of the dnc. >> yeah, so let's talk a little bit about, first of all, this russia issue and then we'll come back and talk day one of the dnc. so bear with me. one of the things that's happened since this leaked e-mail issue, since the nearly 20,000 dnc e-mails were released by wikileaks, democrats have said this is something that was intentionally date of birth by the russians potentially to help the candidacy of donald trump, pointing to the timing hours, a couple days before the start of the democratic convention. what we have seen -- multiple cyber security experts tell nbc news, it is likely russia is behind this suspected hack. wikileaks later leaking those documents. let me read a statement i got from the trump campaign, pushing back against the idea there is any linkage there. that while mr. trump, according to a campaign spokesperson, has many successful international businesses and prop

let's get to hallie jackson now. one of our reporters checking the phone, talking to sort rzs. hallie, what are you hearing about a potential running mate decision? >> it will come down soon, craig, as we've been reaching out to our sources and folks inside and outside the campaign. as you know, nbc news is characterizing this as essentially too early to say who the vice presidential pick for donald trump will be. we have been told by a couple of sources close to trump that he is in the process still of making the decision. although as kelly o'donnell has reported and as we are reporting, pence is looking like one of the top contenders. obviously i am told by one source close to the campaign that a lot of that is coming from his family members. specifically wife melania, daughter ivanka, who believe a pick of pence would help in this person's words calm the waters a little bit surrounding the campaign. and that is reflective of what you hear in some gop circles, that it would essentially have the effect of reassuring conservatives of being the safe pick, if you will. but obvious

it was an interesting evening, our thanks to hallie jackson. interesting evening on that floor. >> yeah. and again, we started with a messy, kind of political scrum on the floor. yesterday, we saw that, to great effect, including delegations stomping out and being very angry. we saw some continued anger about that tonight. donald trump jr before his very well received speech, doing an interview with our reporter on the floor, after his delegate totals from new york put his father over the top and expressing anger at those delegates who had created such a scene yesterday. we then also got the alaska delegation today wanting a polling of their -- brought everything to a halt. it was interesting, though. when that happened, that pushed the series of speakers that the republican party had planned to start in 8:00 p.m. tonight, pushed it about 20 minutes late. and we had talked about it on the set, whether the rnc would be skilled enough to get that time back, to tighten up the roster for the evening, so that the podium speeches would be done by 11:

joining me, a journalist with some inside knowledge of the situation, hallie jackson. ces, you've been talking to senators. what happened in there? >> oh, man, kate. so we're talking about the meeting that he had with senate republicans now. you mentioned the house meeting that happened separately. let's focus on what happened in the senate. because by all accounts, it did get testy at points. and i want to talk about three main people that are making news this afternoon. senator jeff flake, ted cruz, and ben sasse. let's start with jeff flake. it seems to have been the most confrontational moment of this meeting. flake standing up and introducing himself to donald trump as the other senator from arizona, the one who wasn't captured. kate, if you remember, that's a clear reference to trump's previous dig at john mccain, a former prisoner of war and the other senator from arizona, obviously. so this was very sharp, it was very confrontational, and i asked senator flake about it within maybe the last hour. i want you to listen to some of that exchange. >> i want to suppor

nbc's hallie jackson nearby, east 4th street. llie, one of the things leading up to the queconvention how will it be different and the tensions between the donald trump wing of the party. walk us through what you think the pence pick does for unity? >> reporter: listen, i think the pence pick is explicitly intended to try to calm waters in the gop, have them say to conservative grassroots movement, listen, we've got your pack. we're picking pence, calm and steady. he's got conservative credentials. seeing this from messaging putting out, we know donald trump is instructing surrogates, rnc instructing sur gas to talk about he's had ultraconservative guy, job creator, pointing to indiana. that is a goal of what they are hoping to do. the question is, is that going to work among people gathering in cleveland republican national convention that starts monday. just hearing conversations from delegates that have already arrived, people are fine with the pick. seems like so far a bit of a tepid response. not all delegates have got be int

let's bring in hallie jackson nearby our position on east fourth street.e, as we look ahead to the convention beginning on monday u, how do you think republicans who did not support trump, do you think this is going to be sufficient enough to change their minds? >> my conversations with some of these delegates who have not rallied around donald trump here in cleveland, there's a sense that as one person said to me, this is uncharacteristic for trump, a smart and thoughtful choice. obviously it's not enough to convince at least this person to get on the trump train, if you will. there is a sense pence could bring together factions of the party who want to see reainsurance from trump, that he's able to move forward and put together a campaign that could move the grass roots. certainly what the trump campaign is hoping for. and what trump himself wants to see. and he was very explicit about it in his speech in new york. listen. >> mike pence will never be afraid to speak the name of our enemy. so important. now, i think if you look at one of the big reasons i

nbc's hallie jackson and chris jansing begin our coverage. hallie, on a day when we'll be hearing from the vp nominee, you news into trump's search for a running mate? >> the veepstakes. we're getting new information about what the process was for the trum team. i'm being told this morning by a kasich advisor that there were multiple overtures made from people close to trump from folks involved with team kasich -- the last coming from donald trump junior himself, the oldest son of donald trump. this conversation according to the aide intended to try to sell the vp pick for kasich as an incredibly powerful position, somebody who would hold a lot of control over domestic and foreign policy. i'm told, okay, if the vp is going to run domestic and foreign policy, what's donald trump going to do? the response from donald trump junior according to the aide was, he'll focus on making america great again. kasich declined, i'm told forcefully, these overtures. obviously donald trump went with indiana governor mike pence as the running mate on his ticket

let's bring in hallie jackson in scrant scranton, pennsylvania, next stop for donald trump. set the seen for us. this is not a press conference now. this is what they are calling a town hall. but they hand picked all the people behind you, right? >> this is set up like a rally. so you have the familiar podium, the american flags in the backdrop, the familiar sound track running on repeat basically. you're right, it is going to be billed as a town hall, which means we expect governor pence and donald trump to take questions from people in the audience. the question being will anybody ask about his comments this morning on russia and the e-mails. i'll tell you this. before we get pinned into the quarter press area here, we were trying to talk to a couple folks. not many had heard about the comments just yet since this news began to couple a couple hours ago, but i wouldn't be surprised to hear it come up here. the energy in the room, these are all trump supporters. they are chanting and cheering. just moments ago right before you came to us, there was a chant of "lock her up",

hallie jackson is in cleveland before us, but before, hallie, we talk trump and his vp list you have just learned that one of the president's most frequent critics is coming with her here, right? >> reporter: senator cruz will be traveling with president obama to dallas for the service today. george w. bush will be there as well. this is significant. we are checking, we believe it may be -- we have our producer on this -- the first time that cruz has traveled with the president on his plane to an event like this. we also know as you pointed out cruz has long been a fierce critic of president obama's but his attendance with him, joining him at this event symbolic in what is happening now as the two joined by other officials from around the country try to provide some measure of comfort to the american people after this tragedy. >> so we also heard that by the way, we just add to this that the speaker of the house has said he could not work it in his travel schedule to come. it is typical for the president to invite key people, including the sitting senator here, but as you say -- >> a
