hallie jackson is at the g20 summit in hamburg for us this morning. hallie, good morning. a busy morning for the president. what are the takeaways from the day so far? >> reporter: we're already halfway through our day here, dara. we're at the site of where some of these g20 meetings are happening. we have moved from our previous location. the president has had a pretty packed day. let me hit you with the recent highlights. we know that he held an impromptu side bar with other world leaders. he just emerged from a room in which he was seen with prime minister turnbull of australia. he's the prime minister who openly mocked president trump earlier this year. he was seen with theresa may, emmanuel macron of france and some of his key cabinet members like secretary mnuchin, secretary ross, his top economic advisor, gary cohn as well, presumably they were hammering out perhaps some of the details of the communique that will come out at the end of the g20 that all of the nations sign onto. that's just our best guess. he also held a meeting with the leader of singapore. the one

i want to bring hallie jackson back in, who is standing by. e obviously an official event, but the two presidents at least seem more friendly than normal. >> well, and i don't know that there is a baseline yet for normality given this is only the third time that they've met, but it certainly is warmer than what we saw that first time around, stephanie. i think you're right on the g-7 where there was sort of that very alpha male aggressive handshake between the two a you watched the ceremony unfold here. i think when you look at the relationship between these two men, it could be really key to the u.s.' relationship with the european union. angela merkel and president trump, obviously the german chancellor and the united states president, also have their share of differences. america kne merkel in the past has taken a leadership role when it comes to eu/u.s. relations. she said today at a press conference despite her policy disagreements with president trump it's important to keep the conversation going, to essentially keep that open line of dia

but as we heard from hallie jackson on the ground. you have the leaders focused on three main things. immigration, free trade and climate change. those are not exactly areas of agreement with most of those countries and donald trump. so, the question is, can donald trump show these leaders that there's other places that they can work on? can he start focusing the issue on security more than anything else? that's what he's going to have to do. because he's still the president of the united states. they may not trust him. they may feel he's unreliable. but you cannot disz the president of the united states. >> he is still aggravating the other members on the same issues that there are disagreement. tweeting about china and trade and last week he made comments about how he's going to get tougher with south korea. so the very issues in which there is disagreement, he is highlighting rather. >> they can't discount the president of the united states. taking donald trump's personality out of it. it's still the president of the united states

and then he goes on to say more definitively after he was pressed by hallie jackson, it was russia, but i think it was probably others also. he criticized president obama he said for doing nothing he said about that intervention for many months and questioned whether it really was as many u.s. intelligence agencies coming to that conclusion has has previously been reported. so again, the hanging question, will he raise that question with president vladimir putin when he meets him here at the g-20 which we expect to happen tomorrow evening. just to go through a few of the other questions, you have talked about him making a commitment to nato, raising the issue of finance again crucially on north korea, the north korea missile test. that missile now people believe an intercontinental ballistic missile, he said i have some pretty severe things that we are thinking about, they are behaving in a very dangerous manner, there will be consequenc consequences. >> and i want to bring in hallie jackson now who is in warsaw. we just saw your exchange with the president there. you were cut off, you

if you take his comments to hally jackson, it would suggest he's not going to. and i have questions about whether we actually know what's going to be said during that meeting. but will he press him on that key issue? you have republicans and democrats urging him to do exactly that. we know there are going to be six people in the room with him. secretary of state rex tillerson, sergey lavrov, and then three translators. so it's going to be a very small group of people who know what's actually said. and the key question is going oo be how tough he is with putin. >> jonathan, what will be learn from a meeting like this with regard to protocols? >> normally countries will release its statements. this is the event that has been months in the making. this is sort of the main event. we've all waited for the trump/putin sit town and i think there's a possibility we won't know entirely what is said. >> what do you think putin is going to get out of it the. >> i think he's going to flatter mr. trump. this is president trump who is still rather inexperienced when it comes
