good morning, i am hallie jackson. le yan caldwell is on capitol hill. we are joined by peter baker, msnbc political analyst. leeanne, the senate is not around. they are not in session. so walk us through the next steps and the crucial role mitch mcconnell will play within it -- when it comes to president trump. >> i will say a big caveat. that all depends on when house speaker nancy pelosi sends articles over to the senate. we got information and -- go ahead. >> i was going to say, explain that piece. she has to send it over be every that happens. are you saying we don't know when that's going to occur, right? >> that's right. so we are waiting on that, when she is going to do that she indicated yesterday that she wasn't going to hold it for a long time. she would do it relatively soon. but here's the thing, if she does it before the 19th, that's next tuesday, the first day the senate is in session. that means that according to senate rules the senate would have to take up impeachment articles on wednesday at 1:00 p.m. everyone knows what's happening on

a republican congressman told hallie jackson that many of his leagues are altering routines. they are working to get body armor, which is reimbursable. he said their expectation is someone may try to kill us. they want an investigation into the visitors the day before the riot. do you think there needs to be one as well? >> there do need to be investigations. last weekend, i contacted the government accountability office and led an effort of 130 of my colleagues to request an investigation. they responded to me and they are starting one. the gao is in the process of working with me and my office and a few others to scope that investigation. there will be other investigations. i would like to see a commission that would look at security issues and the breakdown but also the security issues going forward. look, this is a crime. there was an insurrection against the united states government and the u.s. congress. it was multiple felonies. it was a crime. it will be investigated by the fbi and other law enforcement. they will follow all of the leads and all the facts where it tak

let's go to hallie jackson at the white house as we continue to watch what happens in the senate, and see how this is going to unfold. what are you hearing, hallie? >> yeah. listen. savannah, i think from the white house perspective, there are, you know, the more people that we are talking to tonight, the more you are getting a sense of people that are extremely troubled by -- by what they've seen from president trump. that is evidenced not just by the resignations, savannah, that i know we ticked through here tonight. for example, the social secretary, from others. but the discussion of some resignations by some very high-level officials, including, based on sources that i have talked to, the national security adviser. perhaps, the transportation secretary. we have reached out, obviously, for more official comment. but there are text messages, phone calls, flying across the capitol, across the white house, and across washington, right now. as we look, now, what's happening on the senate floor and the house of representatives floor. worth noting and underscoring what garrett haake was
