meeting wednesday, the party nominated steve scalise for the speakership over ohio's jim jordan hallie jackson has a deep dive on the louisiana conservative who could become one of the most powerful people in washington. >> reporter: the path to this moment nearly two decades in the making for steve scalise, who won a special election in 2008 to represent a district in louisiana, which includes part of new orleans scalise, entering office right around the same time as now-former speaker kevin mccarthy and jim jordan. a tricky time for the gop, considering a democratic landslide had just ushered in the obama era. scalise earning a committee seat, and by 2014 with republicans powering back, scalise won a leadership position as house majority whip, so infuriating jordan that he helped form the ultra conservative house freedom caucus that same year, call force scalise to resign after a political bloegger spoke that he spoke at a gathering that he said he regrets. in june 2017, an attacker opened fire at a congressional baseball practice scalise badly hurt but ultimately returning to work in a mome

. >>> let's bring in hallie jackson to help us put some of this in context. great to see you.nt issues are before the house right now, like the government shutting down potentially like spending bills that they have to pass, if they don't do anything, how important is it to elect a speaker quickly? that's my question, can it happen quickly? >> the government shutdown deadline is coming up here next month, it's like 29, 40 days away, expectation a week from today you would have that internal vote by house republicans to kind of figure out who the next person put forward the next speaker. if it drags past that, that's when you get in that risk territory as it relates to the possibility of a government shutdown, a whole can of worms that we haven't started to unpack yet. you mentioned spending bills, money to help ukraine to fight off the invasion of russia, something that's critically important to some republicans especially over on the senate side, democrats and republicans want to see that. that's been a contentious issue here for the house republican conference and some of th

let me bring in senior washington correspondent hallie jackson. even when a new speaker is chosen, we're still going to see this divide between the majority of republicans and this small group of holdouts? >> reporter: we are. that division that you're talking about, that's the reality for the next speaker of the house there. especially if they keep this rule that lets just one member call for a vote to kick the speaker out. these so-called republican rebels politically, they don't have much to lose. these are people you're seeing in solidly safe republican seats. but some of their gop colleagues are a lot more vulnerable in swing districts with margins that are a lot closer. if the next speaker ends up pulling the house too far to the right to placate those hardliners, those vulnerable republicans could be at risk come 2024. that means, of course, gop control of the house could be at risk they don't have a lot of wiggle room, as we know the longer this drags on, the more real-world impact you're going to see a week without a speaker, okay, probab

hallie jackson joins us to help unpack some of this. and again, we haven't had a speaker for a while now and jim jordan can't seem to get the votes so far, what is the practical impact of all that? >> you look at the practicality of urgency, first, what's happening in the middle east w that international crisis and the war between israel hand mass here, there's an appetite and from the white house of course, to get new aid over to israel, they can't pass. until a house speaker is in place. further out, this government shutdown deadline coming up a month from today, meaning we just went through this, right, is there going to be a deal to get the government funded? part of why mccarthy got ousted as house speaker back then, what happens in 30 days if there's still no house speaker. you go further out, you look at the potential of ukraine might need additional aid the kinds of things that congress is tasked with doing. they that can't happen without a speaker in place. some urgency here. as you're seeing, it's a holding pattern for sure ov
