joining me now from los angeles, nbc news correspondent hallie jackson. hallie what is the latest? is this spreading at the moment or are they able to get it under control? >> it looks like firefighters are on the ground putting water on the cars which is progress from a half hour ago. around 4:30 we knew 500 acres were burned now, it's 2,000 acres. it is movering quickly. firefighters are trying to get a hand on it from the ground and the air. we have seen retardant drops as well to contain this thing. at this point, i want to touch on this this is the highway to vegas. on a friday afternoon, people leaving l.a. to go to vegas at rush hour you are seeing a huge back up the mess on the cahon pass. wind gusts are not helping. we know that at least 15 cars burned. there's no firm number yet. visually, you can see how bad it's gotten. we understand from various fire officials, there are some number of victims, either burned or who inlailed smoke. we cannot confirm the number now. there was talk of a drone drowning the aerial attack. that was not the case. the drones were in the area,

hallie jackson is joining us from los angeles, a reporter out there. weather obviously looks like a nice typical southern california day. is it particularly hot out there today? particularly dry? >> interesting that you ask that because we just got word from cal fire that this is a wind-driven fire. it's very windy where this is happening. that's a huge factor in this. that's visible even to the naked eye. look how far the smoke is blowing. it's not heading straight up. you can see the wind is taking it up the pass. as for the weather, it's a typical july day for california. hot, obviously, but nothing particularly extreme. i want to remind you we're zoomed in on this picture because it's stunning. even as we were talking this fire starting at the cab of the tractor trailer. it spread almost halfway down the truck. if you pull up you can see how big this is together 500 plus acres. there are mandatory evacuations in place. that's worth mentioning as well. >> again, i say that was el cajon, california. actually, the cajon pass. that's where the images y

nbc's hallie jackson with more on that for us. >> reporter: the gun that killed 32-year-old kate steinle originally belonged to a federal agent with the bureau of land management. the weapon stolen from his car according to the agency. prosecutors say that gun ended up in the hands of juan francisco lopez sanchez, who has pleaded not guilty to shooting steinle, raising questions about why the mexican immigrant was allowed to walk free in san francisco in the first place. after drug convictions in washington and oregon federal immigration officials deported lopez sanchez five times. each time he returned to the u.s. within weeks. twice to arizona and twice more to texas. arrested there as recently as 2009. he was released from a bay area jail this spring but san francisco officials never notified i.c.e. they don't have to. san francisco's considered a sanctuary city, along with more than 7 0 other municipalities nationwide including new york and philadelphia. places that generally don't get involved with federal immigration law unless there's a legal reason. >> these sanctuary city polici
