this is halong, it is gusting to 300. a category five hurricane in the atlantic basin. that would be the equivalent here. it's in the middle of the ocean. not bothering anyone yet. it is going northwest. not to the philippines but the southern japanese island. by the time it gets there we will not be dealing with a super typhoon but the winds will be strong and still a dangerous storm. it essentially will peak over open water. as it gains latitude here it will move over an area of increased wind shear. the water temperature and ocean surface temperatures are not as warm. we weaken this as it heads to the southern japanese island. 72 hours is all that you have left. then you have to plan for a powerful storm as it moves in. this is the other storm that impact aed japan. this is why i'm concerned because the flooding is an issue here. this storm dumped heavy amounts of rain. when you get the next typhoon on top of that we will have big problems. the korean peninsula getting hit with the bands here. additional rainfall from the first storm. and halong is still on the way.

and typhoon halong is set to make landfall in japan.logist ivan cabrera standing by at the cnn weather center. how are you? >> good to see you, amara. nasty weather already on top of japan here, and i must say i think the worst of this is still going to be the rainfall because we've had so much of it over the last several weeks here with other typhoons. here's halong, 130-kilometer pr-hour winds. that's just about 80 miles per hour. there's the center of circulation, east of kagoshima. they're going into kochi which has been pounded by torrential rainfall. we're now a foot and a half of rainfall across that area. and the storm hasn't even made it in. all these bands are going to continue to wrap around. we could easily see another 100 to 200 millimeters of water. that is going to be a problem here. and again, this area is just completely saturated, cannot take any more water, so it won't take much falling from the sky to get us into trouble here. one of the areas vulnerable here, kochi, because of the steep terrain, just like what happe

and they have written its last advisory on halong. that's good news but the problem is it's still raining in some areas. look at kochi japan since august 1. 1200 millimeters of rainfall. that's three times as much as they normally get in the entire month of august and it's only 10 august. that's their wettest august ever and their third rainiest month since we've been keeping records here. this is an incredible event for kochi. and mt. torigata. 6 1/2 feet of rain in ten days. that's going to take a while to recede. 130 to 150 kilometer per hour wind gusts. the rain was coming down from the mountains and sideways at times because of the gusty winds. we have this front now that's picked up our typhoon, now tropical storm and we're about to be done with it. just a little more rainfall. tokyo, you'll be seeing the heaviest of the rain as this begins to scoot off to the north and east. quiet relatively in the tropics. nothing doing here. that's good news for our friends in the western pacific. still keeping an eye on julio. well north of

here's the history of halong. it moved west and now north really with a beeline towards southern japan. but before this typhoon gets there, we had a tropical storm that brought an awful lot of rain. so here's the landfall. the landfall with this one is saturday. the winds will be about 120 to 150. but the biggest problem with this is the extreme flooding. the intensity of a hurricane or a typhoon doesn't lead to flooding. it's the forward speed, the slower it goes, the more we'll see. so here's a look at the time line. we can see it make its way for the weekend, of course. but it was the tropical storm nakri that came before this that saw just an incredible amount of rain. historic amounts of rain for really two areas. and this typhoon expected to roll over the same terrain. so in kochi, the fourth wettest august on record. and sunday was the wettest august day they had ever seen. they saw a foot of rain in seven hours alone. 54 inches in the last six days. so an incredible amount. and here's one other spot. alrea

halong is threatening the country with record-set ing rainfall and floods. it happened early sunday. some areas are expected to get up to 30 centimeters of rain. the japan meteorological agency issued an emergency weather warning for one southwestern prefek chur. 1.5 million people have been evacuated. >> for more on the storm, meteorologist ivan cabrera at the weather center. what's the situation? >> the thing with halong, it was weakening before it made landfall. if you can believe that. the issue is the rainfall and the fact we had another system, another tropical cyclone that dumped incredible amounts of rain a couple of weeks ago. here we have a weakening storm. no longer a typhoon. at 95 kilometer an hour winds. the wind threat is not there any longer. just the rainfall that pounds japan at this hour. here's the radar looking at the bands coming through with the significant rainfall. tokyo not in on that. it has been they got two meters of rainfall. 6 .5 feet. that is just with the last two storms beginning august 1st and ending on the 10th. in ten day

now what is left of halong is an extropical storm. it no longer has tropical characteristics. it's bringing gusty winds out here. in northwestern portions of okaida we have seen winds up wards of 68 kilometers per hour. record breaking rains, 160 millimeters. now you can see the low continuing to spin off there in the northern portions of the sea of japan. the thing i do want to mention is that we had a cold front that is extending towards the south. our tropical was pulling in cool air out of russia. that has set up some line of thunderstorms and heavy rain across central portions of japan. it's not going to be anything nearly as severe as when this storm system came through. you do not need more rainfall. you could see 100 to 150 millimeters of rain. this is something we want to watch. into tokyo around noon up to the early afternoon hours, you could hear a rumble of thunder or two as well as that continues to push through. back towards the west into the korean peninsula, dry conditions. into southeastern china, what we have been seeing is the monsoonal flow continuing to pu

now, halong was a super typhoon. it is now a typhoon. it is down.till 165-kilometer-per-hour sustained now. a minute sustained in the open water. also the wind gusts at 205. it is moving north-northeast and making a beeline for southern japan. but it's had quite a history. you see its westerly trajectory and then its north-northeast trajectory. again, now a typhoon. it is strengthening, though. but the biggest really fear with this will be when it makes landfall, its winds up to about 150 kilometers per hour. but flooding will be the biggest factor with this. and believe it or not, intensity, whether it's a super typhoon, a typhoon or a tropical storm, the intensity doesn't really -- isn't as big a factor as forward speed. forward momentum. so the problem with this thing, the slower it goes, the more flooding we'll see. and it will be exacerbated by the flooding we've already seen from a tropical storm three days ago. here's the look. again, it moves on shore and kochi once again under the again. it became a tropical depression when it came to japan

then as we go into the weekend, we have to look out for typhoon halong. here it is moving toward the north-northeast at 15 kilometers per hour. okinawa, you'll be dealing with these effects thursday into friday. western japan, you'll feel the effects coming up by the weekend. lots of rainfall expected with this particular system. also, even though the stationary front is going to be over the area, that's going to continue to pump some more moisture into the northern portions of japan as well. so here's a look at the forecast. central japan dealing with very warm weather. low to mid-30s in that area. seoul, 30 degrees with a chance for some rain and also down toward the south in the philippines monsoonal rains will be bringing rainfall into your area. some people wading through chest-deep water in manila because of the heavy rainfall. let's turn our attention to the eastern pacific. we have two tropical systems setting its sights toward hawaii. first, we're talking about azel. you notice the characteristic eye has all but disappeared. the reason is because

this is strong typhoon halong which is packing gusts 220 kilometers an hour and it could even intensifyhth as further as it moves closer to okinawa into a very strong typhoon status. no matter what the intensity it, it will be bringing up the waves as high as 7 meters. about 10 meters high tomorrow. and by the time it reaches okinawa, early saturday throughout the weekend with very gusty conditions as well as very heavy rain and that is likely to push into western japan the next coming days. not only will it be directly affecting japan the surrounding countries will be drenched with very heavy rainfall especially northern luzon because of the southwestern monsoonal flow being very affective. mega city manila has been already been hit with heavy flooding. no more rain is welcomed there. japan is experiencing extreme heat. temperatures will be above 35 degrees in central japan. heat advisories are posted widely here. in and around tokyo, metropolitan region it could be the hottest day of the summer so far. so please watch out for heatstroke. down below here in southern half of china. heat

and we are watching out for typhoon halong. we see the people moving around here, people in imami island are dealing with heavy rains and fierce winds, people trying to hang on to their umbrella because of the strong winds this was the scene when the center of the storm was located 200 kilometers from the area. trees swaying, the heavy rainfall, you can barely see the roads, it made for hazardous driving conditions and this is just the beginning of the story. the system has not arrived yet. it's just beginning to move into the area. by the way as you probably already know, flights have been canceled. the ferries have been canceled because it's way too dangerous to operate. the other concern with the system is it's moving very slowly to the north at 15 kilometers per hour. so the concern is for flash flooding, heavy rainfall for an extended period of time. here's a look at the forecast for the next 24 hours. in shii co-cue, up to 500 millimeters of rainfall possible. in addition to 1600 millimeters of coastal rainfall in parts o

halong is picking up speed and expected to slam southwestern japan later this week. flood warnings are in effect. a lot of people watching in japan right now, so at least they'll have an opportunity to prepare. but the country is not really in a good position when it comes to severe weather this week. >> one after another. the town of coachy has seen more rainfall. about 24, 26 inches of rain per year. they've received that in about seven to 10 hours across that region, the southern portion of japan. the storm system very unimpressive on satellite imagery. but the amount of moisture associated with this storm system came down in recent days, absolutely staggering. that line is where the storm went. the moisture, battered portions of japan, brought down more than 26 inches, or some 680 millimeters of rainfall in spots in just a matter of a couple days. that's nearly doubling their monthly average and even portions of south korea. 1,600 homes without power, 70 flights canceled in that region all of that because of blinding rainfall. and more rain in the forecast over t

another typhoon, halong, is expected to speed up and slam into southwestern japan later this week. for more on the storm, along with the typhoon moving towards japan, let's bring in pedra. >> japan, they're just getting nailed. >> the timing couldn't be any worse. talking about the typhoon that errol referenced, the wave heights associated with that typhoon over the open waters, some 45 feet high. that's the open waves across the ocean. that's how significant the storm is. this tropical depression is the one that's caused all the mess across this region in recent days. a very weak system, winds only 45 to 5 five miles per hour, but look at the footage, out of kochi, with the significance of the flooding. this region from saturday to sunday, saw about 700 millimeters, or 26 inches of rainfall. so if you're tuned in from san francisco, that's how much rain you get in an entire year. or paris, london, these are annual rainfall totals for those cities, that this area saw in just a matter of a few hours. and the storm system itself, the line kind of indicates where it went. the moisture

halong at this hour weakened a little bit. the winds have dropped to 150 kilometers per hour. it would be considered about 90, 95 miles per hour. still a strong category 1 hurricane equivalent as it sits out there about 1,000 kilometers east of taiwan or 600 miles east of taiwan. a couple of days ago this was a supertyphoon. it was category 5 equivalent. that's the good news as far as weakening. the track bad news. this region of southern japan has already seen historic rainfall in recent days. talking about 40 inches in a few spots or nearly a meter of rainfall have come down this. storm system has the potential to really exacerbate the flash flooding issue here in the next few days. landfall friday night into saturday morning. look at the cone of uncertainty. even puts tokyo in line here for severe weather as we head in through saturday morning. areas indicated in blue have the most likelihood of impact. again the winds with that point could be a strong category 1 hurricane equivalent as it approaches this region. you can see nearly 200 kilometers per hour when it comes to w

it's out southwest of oak that showing the start of typhoon halong. winds have reported gusting up to 121 kilometers per hour already. and the waves will be as much as it is nearing the islands of ay. okinawa and possibly making landfall in southern kyushu as we progress through the next few days and probably making it toward tohoku but it is gusting at 200 kilometers per hour. we are likely to see the gusts of 200 kilometers per hour and the rainfall accumulations will be staggering amounts. this is not a fast-moving system. it will just be climbing the digits. looks like it is going to be bringing a lot of rainfall to shikoku again which is bad news because the flooding has not alleviated at all. that is due to the moisture from the stalled front in northern japan. it is also surging all the way to tohoku where we have reports of 200 millimeters in the past couple days. and so additional amounts of 100 millimeters are not welcome there. and the land is very prone to flooding and landslides especially. there are a lot of mountains so dangerous and se

typhoon halong made landfall ol sunday leaving around 60 injured. the worst hit, residents warned to move away from rivers and warning of landslides. >>> a bus fell off a 10-meter high cliff after hitting two vehicles. the accident happened in nemo county about 90 kilometers from tibet. most of the passengers were from the eastern regions of china. the risk of traveling by ferry in bangladesh was highlighted when an overcrowded boat capsized. there have been four accidents involving ferries this year as loan loan. it's the only option for many people. >> reporter: people waiting for the bodies to be found. it's a familiar site in bangladesh. on average, a ferry capsizes once a year, killing hundreds. thousands have died in the past 28 years. it's not just the death did. their entire ferry system is a mess. people have to wait for hours, sometimes days to get on the ships. >> that's one of the reasons that the ferries are often overloaded with passengers and vehicles. government officials say a ferry that capsized this month was carrying close to 300

and then we'll get to halong, which will likely become a typhoon.is low will head to the north and west, essentially west of the korean peninsula here and we'll see some significant rain and very gusty winds. they've already been clocking significant winds along the southern japanese islands. we'll watch for that. but generally transitioning now into a rain event. and then we have this system here that will be bringing us plenty of worries over the next couple of days because this one is likely to strengthen a little bit more than that low pressure to the north. 100 kilometer per hour winds, gusting to typhoon strength, but they have to have maximum sustained winds of 120 plus. looks like we'll get there. it's moving rather slowly, so we have time to watch it. look at this, 72 hours, barely moving. steering currents are weak for this. so eventually it migrates over towards the japanese islands, but that would be next week. so we have time to watch and we'll keep you posted throughout. >> we know you shall, thanks so much. >> we'll get back to your l

typhoon halong is making its way to japan, closing in on china and russia, bringing in rain.it has left a fair bit of damage. i have video out of japan. we dealt with heavy rainfall causing flight concerns, and will deal with more rain to come. a lot of moisture over the island. it packed a wind gust of 85 miles per hour. it set record totals. some areas pecking up a foot and a half of rain fall. a lot of rain and cloep up taking place as the system pulls away. it will weaken. we are not expecting to see reipt grace with the system. it's not the only entity we are tracking. you may remember genevieve. once it crossed the international date line it became a typhoon, but no threat to land. we are monitoring julio, which will be north of the hawaii island. it's a category 1 with winds of 92 miles per hour. could send light wind around the island. there are hurricane warnings for offshore waters and surf advisees up -- advisors up. we'll deal with rip currents until we get into monday morning. some concerns here across the islands. passing showers. as we get closer to home we'll
