this is halong, it is gusting to 300. a category five hurricane in the atlantic basin. that would be the equivalent here. it's in the middle of the ocean. not bothering anyone yet. it is going northwest. not to the philippines but the southern japanese island. by the time it gets there we will not be dealing with a super typhoon but the winds will be strong and still a dangerous storm. it essentially will peak over open water. as it gains latitude here it will move over an area of increased wind shear. the water temperature and ocean surface temperatures are not as warm. we weaken this as it heads to the southern japanese island. 72 hours is all that you have left. then you have to plan for a powerful storm as it moves in. this is the other storm that impact aed japan. this is why i'm concerned because the flooding is an issue here. this storm dumped heavy amounts of rain. when you get the next typhoon on top of that we will have big problems. the korean peninsula getting hit with the bands here. additional rainfall from the first storm. and halong is still on the way.

now what is left of halong is an extropical storm. it no longer has tropical characteristics. it's bringing gusty winds out here. in northwestern portions of okaida we have seen winds up wards of 68 kilometers per hour. record breaking rains, 160 millimeters. now you can see the low continuing to spin off there in the northern portions of the sea of japan. the thing i do want to mention is that we had a cold front that is extending towards the south. our tropical was pulling in cool air out of russia. that has set up some line of thunderstorms and heavy rain across central portions of japan. it's not going to be anything nearly as severe as when this storm system came through. you do not need more rainfall. you could see 100 to 150 millimeters of rain. this is something we want to watch. into tokyo around noon up to the early afternoon hours, you could hear a rumble of thunder or two as well as that continues to push through. back towards the west into the korean peninsula, dry conditions. into southeastern china, what we have been seeing is the monsoonal flow continuing to pu

halong at this hour weakened a little bit. the winds have dropped to 150 kilometers per hour. it would be considered about 90, 95 miles per hour. still a strong category 1 hurricane equivalent as it sits out there about 1,000 kilometers east of taiwan or 600 miles east of taiwan. a couple of days ago this was a supertyphoon. it was category 5 equivalent. that's the good news as far as weakening. the track bad news. this region of southern japan has already seen historic rainfall in recent days. talking about 40 inches in a few spots or nearly a meter of rainfall have come down this. storm system has the potential to really exacerbate the flash flooding issue here in the next few days. landfall friday night into saturday morning. look at the cone of uncertainty. even puts tokyo in line here for severe weather as we head in through saturday morning. areas indicated in blue have the most likelihood of impact. again the winds with that point could be a strong category 1 hurricane equivalent as it approaches this region. you can see nearly 200 kilometers per hour when it comes to w

it's out southwest of oak that showing the start of typhoon halong. winds have reported gusting up to 121 kilometers per hour already. and the waves will be as much as it is nearing the islands of ay. okinawa and possibly making landfall in southern kyushu as we progress through the next few days and probably making it toward tohoku but it is gusting at 200 kilometers per hour. we are likely to see the gusts of 200 kilometers per hour and the rainfall accumulations will be staggering amounts. this is not a fast-moving system. it will just be climbing the digits. looks like it is going to be bringing a lot of rainfall to shikoku again which is bad news because the flooding has not alleviated at all. that is due to the moisture from the stalled front in northern japan. it is also surging all the way to tohoku where we have reports of 200 millimeters in the past couple days. and so additional amounts of 100 millimeters are not welcome there. and the land is very prone to flooding and landslides especially. there are a lot of mountains so dangerous and se
