the small town of haltern, a suburb to the north of dusseldorf and the high school alone they lost 18 people. 16 students and two teachers. most of the students were girls. they are 15 and 16-year-olds in the 10th grade. they had gone to barcelona for a school spanish exchange program and there just for a week and for many it was really supposed to be the highlight of their year. the school does this every few years and sometimes the spanish kids come from germany and other times they go to spain and it is supposed to be the highlight of their year and it ended in tragedy. i spoke with one student who said the school feels empty without the kids. there is about a thousand kids in the entire school so the loss of 16 of them is certainly felt deeply. even if they didn't know the kids personally, the oeshl students would see -- the other students would see them in the hall and so everyone in the school is feeling this and germany itself feeling this loss very hard as most of the victims were from this country. back to you. >> nbc katy tur in germany for us. >>> to help understand more of
