nbc's delia dryer shows us what it's like in hamburg, new york. >> reporter: here in hamburg, new york, conditions have been changing minute to minute and mile to mile. when we first got here this morning, we had complete whiteout conditions. you couldn't even see a few feet in front of you. now we're looking at clear skies that way and heavy snow that way. the band has pushed a few miles to our south and that's where we're seeing snowfall rates of about 3 to 5 inches per hour. that band is about 15 miles wide and 15 miles long, so it's in that zone where we're going to see the heaviest snow. fortunately, for right now, that's not the hardest hit area from the first round of lake effect snow. this was one of the hardest hit areas, and just driving around, it's incredible. just neighborhoods are buried in snow, cars and homes. you see a street sign to a street but you can't find the street. and people are literally stuck in their homes and they're saying the plows might not even get to them for days. the heaviest band of snow is expected to push back into this area later today. there is

of heavy snow fell in a wide area, including hamburg, new york. lake-effect snow is turning western new york into a winter wonderland. cold air from canada swept over the great lakes monday, causing snow development into hamburg and buffalo early tuesday morning. a lake-effect snow warning is in place for the area through wednesday. as much as 15 centimeters of snow can be expected during that time. now the winter storm is still located over eastern part of canada, bringing widespread snowfall, up to 10 centimeter or even 20 centimeters likely for parts of ontario as well as quebec as we go into tuesday morning. and winds are going to be picking up. so you could feel much, much colder than your forecast temperatures. now, the system has pulled away from the eastern u.s., but because of cold air we have widespread freeze warnings, or hard freeze warnings in place for the gulf coast. temperatures overnight could dip below freezing, so bring your pets inside, or bring your sensitive plants inside your room because it's going to be very cold outside a

our meteorologist dylan dreyer is in hamburg. more on this other big storm moving in tonight. hey, dylan, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. the snow falling right now has nothing to do with lake effect. it's just a disturbance moving through. but lake effect snow is such a fascinating phenomenon to produce this much snow in just 24 hours. take a look at the radar from the height of this storm yesterday where we saw these streamers come in. and they pass over the same area for hours and hours and hours producing snowfall rates of four inches per hour. but then a shift in the wind and the whole thing lifts north. now, we are going to see tonight winds shift back to more of an onshore flow. it's going to turn on the lake effect snow machine once again. we're going to see it start around 11:00 tonight and last for about 18 hours producing heavy snow. and where the streamers set up that produce the heaviest snow we could see another three feet fall. and it looks like this area could be the area where we see the three feet, brian. >> dylan dreyer in hamburg, new york.

the hamburg area is one of those areas, see it on the map right there with the green over it.eceived over a foot of snow in hamburg and could end up with another 2 feet by the time this is all said and done in about two days from now. so, pretty serious stuff. it's very localized. it's only about 15 miles wide. it's avoided downtown buffalo, but it's just south of buffalo. and again, this will continue on through the day. two spots in new york state could get 3 to 4 feet, maybe even 5 feet of snow, watertown new york and just south of buffalo. other areas on the lakes are also getting that snow. grand rapids is one of them, and also, eventually erie and then down into cleveland. again, thomas, it is cold, but the good news, by the time get to saturday and sunday, almost the entire country will be at average or above-average temperatures. all of this cold is just going to go away. >> such a weird snap, you know? >> for two weeks, and then you know, then we'll see -- then we get into like a normal, how we should be. >> okay, all right. thank you, bill. much appreciated. >>> comi

commissioner margaret hamburg. dr. margaret hamburg, welcome. this is a pretty sweeping set of requirements. it affects just about all the prepared food people buy. what was your goal here? >> well, as you know, congress passed a law in 2010 asking the fda to put in place new requirements for menu and vending machine labeling. obviously, this reflects the fact that overweight and obesity is a huge problem in this country affecting millions and millions of people and that consumers have a very big interest in knowing more about the food that they eat and the food that they feed their families. so we're trying to provide uniform, consistent information about calories, in particular, but access to other nutritional information as well for consumers when they eat outside the home. >> woodruff: but isn't the research on this on whether providing this kind of information actually leads to cutting calories, isn't that research mixed? >> well, the research is mixed. we need to learn more about it. some studies have indicated that there are clear benefit

mike bettes joins us live from hamburg, new york, buffalo suburb. mike, good morning. .his i >> reporter: it really is. this is a record setter. this ia that has been really shut down. they know how to deal with snow here. let me give you a lay of the land. our crew is stranded here with dozens of other travelers. we barely made it here yesterday. we were the last car to roll in after a plow it. we're stuck. we didn't have a four-wheel-dri. this car was parked here all day yesterday, all day today. it's under a portico. there's a roof! if we didn't have a four-wheel-d we would have been trouble yesterday. our cameraman got stuck behind semis that got stuck. if we hadn't picked him up, he would have been i a lot of trouble. this is since about 3:30 yesterday afternoon. look how much we picked up on the two feet we had on top of that. we'll trudge throu the snow. it is about knee deep. it is tough to get through. it's a fluffy snow. it is terrible for making a snowball or snowman. this part has actually been plowed. this is about a foot of snow here.
