professor hamilton, thank you for being with us. >> i'm delighted.ill come back to part two of our conversation with historian nigel hamilton about his book "lincoln versus davis: the war of the presidents" in the first part we covered six months, from november 6, 1860, election day, 61through april 12, 1861. when fort sumter was attacked. during that time after election date was january 21 jefferson davis resigned from the u.s. senate, the confederacy was formed on february 4 of 1861 and february 11, 1861 both abraham lincoln and jefferson davis depart from their perspective and all girls. federal 18th jefferson davis was inaugurated president of the e confederacy in montgomery and march 4 abraham lincoln was inaugurated president of the united states. april 12, 1861, fort sumter was attacked by the confederate states of america. i'm going to quote from your book, nigel hamilton, around 6:00 p.m. on april 13 1861 it was over. a war of chivalry and independence condteby white soldiers of the south, raged against a white enemy denying its right to bre

hamilton boyd, does he want an army? and i wonder if you would talk about his efforts and what standing army meant to americans, because we also went to, i think, one of your arguments is that john adams is reflecting more what americans want and maybe talk a little bit about that and maybe the navy as well. yeah. so in response to the quasi war, congress passed the limitation acts. but they also did two other things. they finally created an able department and built out the navy, which adams had been clamoring for for decades, because as a good son of new england, he knew where the wood came from, where the ships were built, where the sailors came from, where most of the merchants were located. but he also understood the value of a navy for diplomacy and benefiting the american economy. so he was pumped about the navy. congress also expand of the army from about 2500 to 50000. he did not want a 50,000 man army largely because he knew that the arch federalists were very involved in the ordering of the officers and in the

nigel hamilton, what did you hear?what i hear is that neither man actually wants to touch slavery. and davis is pretending it's all about states rights and nobody should be allowed to interfere with the states and lincoln is trying to pretend he's not a black republican as he was called and that he has absolutely no intention of interfering with the "prophecy" of southerners. in other words, both men are sweeping slavery, this is this phrase used by the wonderful james mcpherson, who wrote a terrific book tried by fire about lincoln as commander-in-chief. both presidents for almost 2 years sweep slavery y under the carpet. and the more this book took over four years to write the more i worked on edit, the more felt that the untold stories just how lincoln, how unwilling he was to tackle slavery and what ultimately, what it took to force fhim to basically change his tune. >> both davis and lincoln were ignoring the issue for the most part, is that a fair statement. >> that's perfectly fair. was in political reasoning? >

some rain moves in snow over mount hamilton and really, this continues at 6 a.m. by 9 a.m. it's starting to push on out of here and by noon it is done with this system. rainfall totals pretty much reflect this. some areas to the north may not measure anything, but you will notice the higher totals are further south. as this system is taking more of a southern trajectory about a third of an inch in mountain view and san jose, 4/10 in redwood city. winter storm watch is going to go up wednesday evening to friday evening above 4500ft. big time snow expected for the mountains 2 to 4ft above 6000. gusty winds, very difficult travel. so keep that in mind. and i do want to show you that system on thursday is going to really drench us. the sierra is going to get more snow heading into friday. and then you get a break just in time for the chinese new year parade. as we head into sunday. another opportunity for some rain going into monday. it's a chance and then it is all done. but that thursday system will bring us heavier rain. the accuweather seven day forecast. cold morning late

last night the model runs showed the possibility of some of that snow at mount hamilton. and that's exactly what we saw this morning. so as this forecast verifies notice that around 11:00 we do start to get some pockets. but i talked about that important window for that morning commute. so tomorrorow rning if you have to travel between 5 and 7 a.m, look at that intensity that lies in the south bay, especially over the santa cruz mountains. so we're talking about highway 17. we're going to watch for the possibility of some flooding, but also gusty winds. so flood concerns do go into effect starting tonight. we've got flood watches. in effect. this is going to stay in place all the way through saturday morning. in addition to flood concerns i talked about those strong winds. and this goes into effect. we've got everything from wind advisories. also. we've got some wind concerns around the coast. highest winds will be for the hills above 1000ft. but anything tonight or even right now that you can tie down in your backyard highly advise that. also avoid going to the sierra. w

and yes, i mentioned a few snow flakes could fly up at places like mount hamilton. the models picking up on that in the early morning hours and then we get a little bit of a break on wednesday and then wednesday evening. also later in the evening. so this is now taking to about 10:30pm. this is the second hit of rain. and this is the one that is going to be more impactful. you see those heavier showers coming in in the overnight on thursday. it kind of lasting into our thursday. so that's the one that i'm worried about. it's also gonna come with wind. and there is the ever so slight chance. but still a chance of some severe thunderstorms. this is that first hit tuesday night into wednesday. and then the second hit. that's the big one. and you can see where some of these totals, particularly as we look towards the south bay in the east bay, which are places that have been running at a deficit of rain. so in a way it be a good thing, but i hope you don't get too much too quickly. we just want to look out for that. obviously today we don't have those issues. i want to
