talk about why she's doing so well in new hampshire. >> why is she doing so well in new hampshire? because, take a look, moderate share of the gop primary electorate, this is the group that trump does worst with, it's the group that nikki haley does best with. take a look at how much moderates make up of new hampshire, it's 36%. nationally, they only make up 27% of the vote. and in iowa, where there was also a cbs news ugov. poll, moderates only make up 17% of the vote. so the new hampshire electorate is far better for her either nationally or in iowa. here's the real question. is winning new hampshire merely enough? national gop front-runners who won iowa and lost new hampshire, which perhaps could happen to donald trump, bob dole in 1996, george w. bush in 2000. both of them won the nomination, so nikki haley has a long hill to climb. she'll have to do something historic, but the fact is at this point, she's in a better position certainly than she was a month or two months ago. >> for sure. >> thank you, harry. appreciate it. >> back with us now to discuss, cnn political analyst,

she cannot sink and iowa and rely all in new hampshire. how does she have to do in iowa if she does well in hampshire? >> she has got to do well. politics is funny. you can call it a strong third in a week second. go figure. that is part of how iowa works. it's not about who wins there, it is about winnowing the field down. if you get to the conversation coming out of iowa with these being the three people. let's not have the conversation. if you somehow finish ahead of ron desantis, that changes the math for us. she needs to not do super strongly in iowa but she cannot be forgotten in that conversation either. >> it is about exceeding expectations. >> also it is -- she does not have the organization in iowa the run desantis. has he is an all 99 counties in iowa. he's banking everything on iowa because he did not have much of that organization in new hampshire the haley does. >> to that point, charlie, if ron desantis does pretty well in iowa. so he comes in second win -- favored in south carolina? she was a popular governor there. where r

, endorsed nikki haley and she does not win new hampshire? >> i don't think she is expecting that no one has expected her to this point to win new hampshire except me. trump has to win iowa and new hampshire. that's the expectation. if he doesn't win these two states he falls short of the national expectations and narrative over the past year. so that would be a shocker in itself. so nobody has to win this state. what we are trying to do is get a differentiator. trump and haley going forward into her own state of south carolina and i've always said in a one-on-one race if you can get it there, before super tuesday, i think it's going to be there sooner than that, in the one-on-one race, now folks have a binary decision and the whole psychology of the inevitability of trump and the psychology of choice, it all gets very different. i think a lot more people engaged to nikki haley's benefit. >> the super pac supporting donald trump is out with its first ad against nikki haley running in new hampshire. it accuses her of flip-flopping on the issue

nikki haley's focusing on new hampshire. faced questions from a 9-year-old boy about why she no longer supports former president trump. >> how can you treat your g.o.p. like that in just eight years and will you pardon donald trump? >> i told you i think he's the right president at the right time, i told you i agree with a lot of his policies, but do i think the right president to go forward? no, we can't handle the chaos anymore. >> haley also said she'd parted the former president if he's convicted. elsewhere on the trail, ron desantis is back in iowa today. vivek ramaswamy is also there and he claims his campaigns bringing new people to the g.o.p. >> 40% of our governors are first time ever donors to the g.o.p. that number is 2% for other republican candidates. that gives you a sense for how different this campaign is. we are making independent decisions and we will get the dues paying offer that on january 15. >> but vivek ramaswamy campaign stop spending money is on campaign ads. the campaign spent $6,000 on tv ads last

the new hampshire primary is an open primary. if you are not affiliated with the democratic party, you can vote in that primary. and when you look at 012, and 2016, those were two races where you had a huge number, over 40% of the folks who took part in those republican primaries, were independents and nikki haley has a huge opportunity there, to actually win in new hampshire. and that would blow up the narrative about donald trump's inevitability. >> kara -- >> okay, sure. >> i don't know what planet you're living on. >> do you take nikki seriously? >> i think she is a very good candidate for another time and donald trump exists, and unless they're marching to san quentin, i guess, i think he is the nominee. >> here is the way this could play out. if we're entertaining the notion that this is possible, i have to think back to the 2000 campaign, right? you have the big bush juggernaut, wins at iowa, then goes to new hampshire, and because of exactly what reihan said, in new hampshire, and independents get to participate, back in
