for "nightly business report," i'm hampton pearson in washington. >>> as hampton just reported, the health care industry is leading the way in job creation. there's one sector that is still suffering job losses, and that is energy. the mining sector which includes oil and gas shed another 9,000 jobs in august. the labor department says that brings a total losses up to 90,000 since december. we've seen declines every month this year, but the cuts seem to once again be gaining momentum. many in the sector have been keeping tabs on announced layoffs. oil consultancy company said national oil well varioco are companies that announced cuts in august. and more cuts are coming. >> no doubt that there's going to be scores of thousands of layoffs announced over the coming months as the industry retrenches because of the low price environment. >> reporter: earlier this week, oil and gas giant conocophillips announced it would slash 10% of its work force. it's not just energy companies laying off workers. the pain is rippling out to other industries as well. last month manufacturing shed 17,000 jobs.

wmur's jennifer crompton is live tonight from hampton with more on that. reporter: we are here at hampton beach where things are quiet now, but that wasn't the case a few hours ago where from concern was between 1:00 and 3:00 when the astronomical high tide hit. the combination of that and the strong winds created lots of splashover along the coastline, especially along route 1a. debris was visible in some spots. a dramatic scene, lots of people out to get a look at the turbulence, but no real problems associated with it, thankfully. streets were flooded in some places at high tide, but officials say this was not any worse than they usually see with that moon tide storm combo. even on the back side of the beach along the marsh where homes became virtual islands for a time. >> are you marooned right now? >> well, until the tide goes back out, yes. reporter: is that concerning to you? >> no, because i've been here for over 30 years and i'm used to it. it will go back out in an hour. reporter: again, officials say there weren't really any problems associated

hampton pearson has all the details. >> reporter: volkswagen in hopes of clearing the air after it wasght cheating on diesel emissions tests in the u.s. today announced plans for a corporate overhaul. it named mathias mueller, the head of its porsche division, as its new ceo. meanwhile, michael horn will remain ceo of the volkswagen group in america. members of the supervisory board pledged to do everything possible to win back the public trust in the wake of the emissions scandal. >> the test manipulation on diesel engines for volkswagen mean a moral and political disaster. the non-compliant actions of developers and engineers and development shocked volkswagen as it did the general public. >> reporter: vw has admitted installing so-called defeat devices on volkswagen and audi cars with four-cylinder diesel engines on some 11 million cars worldwide including about 500,000 vehicles in the u.s. late friday the justice department announced its own investigation. meanwhile, the environmental protection agency is sending letters to all auto manufacturers outlining major changes to the way
