for "nightly business report," i'm hampton pierson in washington. >> last night's victories by republican lawmakers also raises a lot of questions for the u.s. economy and for the federal reserve. steve liesman has that part of the story. >> the new gop controlled congress could be trouble not just for the president but fed chair janet yell condition, as well. several bills including one to audit how the fed makes monetary policy which she opposed could pass both hoises now and end up on the president's desk. >> i think we ought to have an audit the fed bill that moves through. that makes common sense. nobody can tell you what the dped is. let's have the an audit and see what's there. the president shade he would it be the most transparent president ever. >> how much the gop focuses on the fed is one of the outstanding economics questions raised by the republicans' huge victory. the gop will quickly have critical decisions to make about things like the budget, banking and the minimum wage. a continuing resolution that funds the government runs out december 11th and the rule to suspend it

. >> hampton pierson, thank you. we appreciate it. we want to turn now to some developing news out of ukraine. a military spokesman there says an armored column of 32 tanks and more than 2 dozen trucks have crossed the border from russia into ukraine. technically, there's been a cease-fire in place there for more than two months. but hundreds have been killed in sporadic fighting since then. despite those reports, the russian government said today it's still committed to the peace process in that part of the world. nbc's jim maceda is live in london with the very latest. >> the report which is just coming out today, though it happened yesterday, is from that ukrainian defense ministry spokesman andre lieuchenko. according to him, the russians are using a column of heavy armor which includes artillery systems as well as those tanks you mentioned and they're trying to rearm and resupply pro-russian rebels in that ugantz area of eastern ukraine. that's one of two parts, breakaway parts of ukraine that make up the new russia. the breakawa

hampton pierson, what are they? >> 214,000. october nonfarm payrolls increase by 214,000 jobs.mployment rate is 5.8%. average hourly earnings up 0.1%. that 5.8% unemployment rate is the lowest it's been since july 2008. year over year, wage gains at 2%. slightly less than consensus on the total number. slight down tick in unemployment. we did have revisions. the net revisions increased total jobs over the last two months by 31,000. job gains across the board. food services up 42,000. professional and business services, plus 37,000. health care up 25,000. retail trade, 27,000. the only downturn, information services losing 4,000 jobs. now, among the other headlines, the total number of employed increased by 683,000 in october. that's the highest monthly increase since november of 2013. the labor force participation rate, 62.8%, a slight uptick from 62.7 in september. average workweek, 34.6 hours, up one-tenth. the total unemployment rate, 11.5% in october, down from 11.8 in september and down from 13.2% a year ago. long-term unemployed, 2.9 million, about 32% of the total unempl
