news4's jim handly joins us now live from olympic park with more on the weather worries. jim, i know you're not complaining about the warm weather. but big troubles for the athletes there. >> reporter: it has been. you may want to cover your ears when i mention this temperature. we almost made it to 70 in sochi yesterday. at no point today at any mountain cluster will it even come close to freezing. the motto is how cool is yours, this week not cool enough. this is some of the scenery visitors are taking in. the weather has pushed up or canceled some events. some athletes don't mind and spectators definitely don't mind. one guy from florida says he feels at home in his shorts and flip-flops. >> i brought shorts and flip-flops thinking i'd wear them around the hotel and just -- i didn't expect to wear them to a hockey game in russia for the olympics. when i saw it was nice, i decided to do it. >> i know the weather here. i was ready for everything, even thunder, whatever can happen. we have great mountains, great skiing. >> reporter: so far no thunder in sochi. two big nam

news4's jim handly has more on the actions causing such a stir. >> reporter: this is a disturbing story. as tight as security has been for people around here, dogs seem to have the run of the place. now, a pest control company says it's been hired in sochi to exterminate them. since we've been here, we have seen them everywhere. take a look at some pictures that we shot in recent days. we saw them wandering the streets, sidewalks, around venues and in neighborhoods. they tend to gather near construction sites that also seem to be everywhere. they can find food from migrant workers. the city has thousands of stray dogs. the ones we saw seem to be harmless and approachable, but there have been reports of some biting kids. sochi city hall last year announced a contract to catch and dispose of stray dogs, but animal activists protested, and officials backed off and pledged to build animal shelters, but no shelter's been built. shooting stray dogs has been common practice in many russian regions. the head of the pest control company in the sochi region refused to say how many dogs they kill

news4's jim handly joins us now live from olympic park with the details just released. jim, good morning. hope you have secrets for us. >> reporter: we do. there are still a few secrets out there. but some are coming out right now. plenty of surprises still on tap tonight. no necessarily spoiler alerts to share, but tell have an industrial theme reflecting the russian revolution. we've been listening to music, choirs and orchestras performing. we've heard this morning that a gay band will be performing, tattoo. one of the few russian bands with worldwide recognition. they'll be performing tonight. also, there will be space images of earth projected down to the floor in the stadium. now each of those images will have the country's name in alphabetical order. all of the athletes will be coming out as their names are called. the names of their countries. there will be 3,000 athletes taking part in this opening ceremony representing 88 countries. the volunteers are also a big part of the ceremony tonight. on hand we've got about 25,000 of them this week. and one is from our

i'm pat lawson muse in for jim handl handly. >> we begin with a story out of maermt county police areestigating a deadly accident of an elderly man hit by a school bus and there were children on that bus. live at the scene, kristen? >> reporter: any time you hear of an accident with school children on board a school bus, you have to be concerned. we learned the elderly man hit was taken to the hospital where he died. this is where we are. we're in silver spring, again, at the intersection of route 29 and tech road. the bus is a howard county public school bus. 12 middle school students and their principal were on it, on their way back to howard county on a field trip going to d.c. the man was heading towards a sh shopping center and the bus going north of 29 when it hit him. police say they are still looking into whether the pedestrian had the right of way. right now, officers are trying to reconstruct the accident, looking at forensic evidence on the road and talking to the bus driver and witnesses. meanwhile, police have this advice. >> what we are telling citizens, this time of the

jim handly with more on problems organizers are having. >> reporter: good morning to you once again. you know, the sounds you hear through the night, it's not music, not fireworks yet. it is still jackhammers, hammers drilling, trucks, too, getting a workout around the clock. not enough hours in the day here still in sochi, with the deadline fast approaching on friday, the infrastructure for visitors and media still a work in progress. some journalists, especially in the mountain cluster, complain of substandard conditions. some with credentials have been turned away from unfinished hotels or checked in to unfinished rooms. some rooms were made available be but workers could still be seen ripping paving stone up and putting up plywood. more than 11,000 journalists are working here in sochi. we talked to a virginia volunteer today about her hotel. how are your living quarters? >> they're great. they're free so i cannot complain. i have no curtains on my windows. it's an adjustment. >> reporter: you are hoping for cloudy days. seeing a lot of sun. >> yeah. >> reporter: now, kimberly to

news4's jim handly joining us live again from olympic park with more on that and what folks might want to watch today. jim, good morning. >> reporter: good morning again, aaron. this time it is the weather again. we're talking fog here and up in the mountains especially. causing two cancelations today and backing up things in other venues, too. take a look at this live picture over olympic park, over the black sea. usually you can see the mountains off into the distance from where we are. right now, they're shrouded in clouds. that has caused men's snowboard cross to be canceled today, and the start of the men's 15k biathlon postponed to tomorrow. it's making for a crowded and busy day. look at what else is on tap. good to go if you're indoors. meryl davis and charlie white have a good chance of bringing home the first gold in ice dancing in u.s. history. they lead going into the free program. the u.s. could also break a more than 60-year medal drought in the two-man bobsled. right now team usa sits in third spot going into the final two runs. and women's ice hockey takes the ice again
