haney, miss lee, miss norton. >> thank you. please join me in the pledge . thank you. item a is approval of board minutes. there are none tonight. item b. >> thank you president norton and i'd like to say good evening to everyone. a lot of exciting news this evening and i'd like to start by talking a little bit about superintendent's great adventure over the last nine days. i was very honored last week to have the opportunity to visit china as part of an exchange program through the council of the great city schools and the foundation for cultural exchange who are exploring the partnership with our schools and chinese schools. i was one of five soupers from the united states who traveled to eye that to tour schools and experience their educational system. i was able to travel to five different cities. i visited the shanghai middle school, the foreign affairs school. i also visited the foreign languages school. and i was also able to do something very dear to my heart -- see the cultural arts in china. we attended an opera in the beijing opera house. we also had a tour

commissioner haney, can you update us on the meetings of the rules committee. >> sure, so the book of our meeting was spent on the legislative overview so we reviewed dozens of bills. we ended up taking a position of support on eight bills and oppose on three and we're still watching 38 bills and that list, i'm sure is being added to as we speak because we met -- our meeting was on march 20 but it was around the bill introduction deadline. so our next meeting will be on the 17th. so we'll be reviewing the bills and continuing to take positions at that time. the other item that we heard was consideration in action on the schedule of advisory committee reports to the board of education so all the members of the board should have a copy of the new schedule for advisory committee reports, both for standing reports and for the ones that will be happening /spaoerdically and some cases once or twice a year. and i was told by commissioner to read this. the board of education's advisory [inaudible] will be up on our district website shortly so we'll make that available so everybody knows all t

i've seen judy haney's case, the lawyer was actually so intoxicated, the judge stopped the trial in themiddle of the trial and made the lawyer spend a day in jail, becoming sober, then picked the trial back up. the client was sentenced to death. and on appeal, the state appellate court said, "no constitutional problem with that." i've seen dozens of people go before the judge after waiting for months to get a lawyer appointed. say, "your honor, just, i'll plead guilty. just please let me go home." and so they never actually get the lawyer they're entitled to because the no lawyer has been appointed. we see it too frequently. it's in so many of these cases, no investigation, no mitigation, we've got death penalty cases where the lawyer basically tells the jury that he hates his client. calvin burdine, was openly gay, the lawyer basically told the jury, i don't care whether you sentence him to death or not. he was a criminal defense attorney, representing a man who was openly gay, about whom he expressed hostility and contempt. >> i don't know if you saw this remarkable article recently i
