commissioner haney? >> thank you for the presentation and for all the preparation that you have done for this big shift for us. so it seems like a lot of this, well entirely this year is for us to learn from the process. so, in terms of the feedback that we are going to get from the folks who participate, what is that going to look like. is there a longer assessment process not just around the technology, but around the experience for students and the thoughts they have. is that something that's been considered as we assess. obviously the state is going to want to know a lot more than us. but what are we seeking to learn from ourselves in addition to whether the capabilities are in place? >> i think what we are seeking is primarily getting not only from a level of the content, but assessments will give meaning to the standards so you know we get more clearer as to what the standards are all about. even you will see in the item types, we will have to have a different classroom format so that which is more

ian haney lopez is the professor at the berkeley center of law. he is the newest senior fellow here at d-mos. and he authored "white by law" and i don't want to spend too much time before we dig into the book. professor lopez, i am going to pretend like i have not read the book multiple times. i will put myself in the shoes of a reader walking by this book on the bookstand or shelves and ask you a few questions about the cover. what good would a book about race be if we could not judge it by its cover. what is is "dog whistle politics" first? >> i do like the irony of judging a book by its cover. first, thank you heather, thank you rich, thank you strand, and thank you all of you for being here. this is a term i think most of you have heard. it is in the political decision and uses colds to attract voters that isn't about race, but underneath is agitating racial society. obama is a food stamp president, illegal alien i would say. if you are press you can deny any racial intent, but the main purpose triggers a sense of racial threat from minorities

i also hope haney would follow this resolution and requesting data for updating on the progress. i would expect that and we all believe that education is a human right. it is our job as education advocates and policy makers to ensure that happens. i added an amendment to include referrals. i think it needs to be mentioned that although we are talking about suspensions in here that classic referrals are in the thousands. that is an issue that we are going to be looking at and to give teachers the skills and to feel comfortable using those skills to really discipline in a different way. this is not something that i believe will happen over night. as i said, i think it a matter of will. i don't think this is a district that cannot do this. i fully expect that we are able to bring everyone on board with this and having feel comfortable with the skills to address those issues and keep our students in the classroom. and i appreciate actually our labor partners partnering with us. we can't do this alone. it is always always in partnership. thank you very much, commissioner haney, thank
