she talked about her friends and neighbors, people who power the work of hanford. she talked about how a colleague's mom got beryllium disease. then she retired and, after many years working at this site, she's now not chasing her grandkids around, she can't. she doesn't have the lung capacity to run around and play with her grandchildren. it's heartbreaking, but it is not an uncommon story in the tricities and why this bill matters. yes, it's technical. yes, it may not seem like a big difference if you aren't involved in this kind of work day to day. but this bill will help make sure we don't lose precious time getting workers the fers suppord to manage this awful disease. mr. president, i'm glad we're on track to get this passed into law now, and there's a lot more i want to get done to make sure we are living up to the obligation to take care of those workers, but this is meaningful, important progress. they may not be telling the story of these workers on the silver screen yet, but as long as i'm in the senate you can bet their voices will be heard in the halls

we were living in hanford, california, which is a smallish town california's central valley. surrounded by dairies and cotton and orchards. but this movie, it transports me across the country. it was about a hard charging tv with a clarity of purpose and a really strong feelings about how journalism should be. it took me to washington d.c., where news was life and the stakes were always. the movie was broadcast news. and the dramatic climax place on the night of the white house chorus dinner with holly hunter as tv producer. holly was dressed up as tv producer jane craig and she was this fancy strapless gown, black with, white, polka dots and a big bow on the front. as you can see it made quite an impression. what i saw on the screen seemed so on attainable so very far away. many of the journalists here in this room started it small papers like the hanford sentinel or tv stations and, tiny markets or niche industry. and through hard and determination and pure luck, we wound up here with jobs that rule lives doing. stories about immigration policy. one day. unidentified flying

president, for my colleagues who don't know, during world war ii, the federal government established the hanford site in central washington state to produce the plutonium that our nation needed for nuclear weapons. to the this day, workers are on the job cleaning up that site. it is important but dangerous work. many and one of those dangers is bar reconcilum exposure that causes serious respiratory disease. not everyone who needs these critical medical benefits for beryllium exposure can get them today. right now people have to jump through very costly, unnecessary hoops and even then they could be denied all because the statute is outdated. right now a beryllium blood test that is borderline does not count towards a diagnosis, even when you are experiencing the effects of beryllium exposure or when it is your third such result. that is not right and it is not consistent with the current science either. my amendment simply updates the statute and brings it in line with an osha rule finalized under the last administration so that more workers can easily get the care that they need. and it is a f
