student hannah graham's disappearance. jesse matthew is charged in her death nearly five months after she we want missing. they wrapped up a press conference 45 minutes ago. we'll get right to our northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg live in charlottesville with the latest on these charges. jeff? >> jummy, the investigators here saying that their case against jesse matthew has been wrapped up. they decided to pursue and charge matthew yesterday with first-degree murder charges in the case of hannah graham as well as charges of abduction with intent to defile. now, prosecutors making it very clear they are not charging jesse matthew with capital murder charges which would carry with it the death penalty. they said if they made that decision after very careful deliberation but would not explain exactly why that decision came to be. now, this press conference taking place at 11:00 this morning here authorities today not revealing any information on the evidence against jesse matthew. hannah graham was last seen in dow

hannah's remains were found in october. >> i did see her, and it was very sad to learn that. i spoke to the police and had to give a report. it's sad so it definitely gives me a sense of closure. >> reporter: students say there are now charges in hannah's death, but some people think the death penalty should have been a possible sentence. hannah's abduction and murder has had a chilling affect at uva. >> she reminded every girl it's important to protect yourself. >> reporter: matthews is being held in fairfax for an attempted murder and rape case from 2005. >> officials have connected matthew through dna through the 2009 murder of morgan harrington in charlottesville, but there are charges pending in that case. >>> police have a man in custody charged with attempting to sexually assault a woman in her apartment building. >> reporter: it's easy to get in the first set of doors. it's the second set there are locked. a concierge heard what was going on, came in, and rescued that woman. we told people outside the building and they had a hard time wrapping their heads around this.

today, abc news obtained the footage of hannah's rescue an f.b.i. jet found his tent in the middle of the woods and the video shows hannah risking her life to wait for help. agents were able to get to the location on foot a few hours later. they got hannah to safety and then exchanged gunfire with dimagio. he was killed in that shootout. hundreds of thousands of people who have health care through the affordable health care act may experience tax trouble this year. the obama administration says 800,000 people who used health care.gov received wrong tax information. they're asking those people to delay filing their 2014 taxes. officials are still looking into the root of that problem. a winter weather alert this noon. more snow is headed our way. >> doug is back with a final look at the forecast next. >> we're back with breaking news coming in from richmond this noon where a richmond judge has just sentenced former virginia first lady maureen mcdonnell to one year and one day in prison. that is her sentencing after she was found guilty on corruption

hannah graham is the 18-year-old who disappeared back on september 13th. surveillance video captured matthew walking behind her the night she disappeared. that's the last video. there was no evidence about what happened after that. her body was later found near to jesse matthew's mother's home. >> reporter: it's been almost four months since the skeletal remains of hannah graham were found behind an abandoned home in virginia. today an indictment charging jesse matthew with first-degree murder. >> the prosecution and abduction will bring mr. matthew to justice for these crimes. >> reporter: it was the largest missing person search in virginia history. >> it's about one thing and one thing only and that is finding hannah. >> reporter: surveillance cameras captured be 18-year-old the night she disappeared. desperate pleas from her parents captured the heart of the country. >> please please please help end this nightmare for all of us. >> reporter: it was the same surveillance video that led police to 33-year-old jess e matthew who grew up in charlotteville.

charges are filed against a suspect in the killing of university of virginia student hannah graham. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." breaking now with united states confirming the death of the young american hostage kayla mueller president obama is pledging that her isis krapt captors will be tracked down as he prepares to ask congress to give him new specific authority to carry out the war against the terror group. that would be the first such vote in more than a decade. after a private message and photos sent by isis to the family of kayla mueller, u.s. officials concluded that she was in fact killed. they don't know how or when, but they dismiss the isis claim that she died in an air strike. all this comes as the u.s. suspends all services at a key embassy in the middle east and prepares for a possible evacuation. our correspondents and analysts are standing by along with rear admirable john kirby. let's begin with our senior white house correspondent jim acosta with the very latest. >> the president is vowing the u.s. will make isis pay for the killing of americ

could there be murder charges in the death of hannah graham?e man at the center of the hannah graham murder case has been under the microscope of police for the past several months 32-year-old jesse matthew crossed authorities' radar in september when the 18-year-old university of virginia student went missing, just before dawn on september 13th when graham was last spotted by cameras at a downtown mall near campus matthew also seen in the footage. the surveillance video and other accounts led authorities to identify matthew as the suspect in her disappearance. on september 24th he was taken into custody on charges of abduction, with the intent to defile. after police picked him up in again vesten county texas, 1300 miles away from charlottesville. in october, graham's remains were found, only eight miles from the mall where the college sophomore was last seen. now sources are telling cnn affiliates that matthews' charges have been upgraded to first-degree murder. meanwhile, authorities investigating if he could be connected to a string of unso

hannah graham went missing on september 13th.er body was found a few miles away from the point where she was last seen about a month later. and the only thing that was left of her body was a skull and some bones at the site where the body was left in rural albamoro county. they will not discuss the evidence or whether any kind of a deal was made. they've said this is not a capital murder charge against jesse matthew. for the moment, they are not going to be seeking the death penalty. but it is a first-degree murder charge and the maximum of life in prison comes with that. in addition to this, they are not really discussing the timing of when this case is going to go to trial. jesse matthew is also being tried in fairfax county, virginia, for a 2005 rape. he is on trial. he's going to be on trial for rape in that case, a 2005 rape in fairfax county. he's pleaded not guilty in that case. it's not clear exactly when that case is going to go forward. the defense has asked for a delay in that case and that's been granted. that trial w
