pentagon correspondent hans nichols is following that story. hans, what more do we know here?eporter: there are a couple of important things going on here. this gives you an indication that diplomacy is still taking place. they're talking about sanctions. sometimes the pentagon, there's talk of potentially what you might do on the military side. diplomacy is still working. number two, these are against mostly individuals, not against the chinese banks or banks that have a footprint in china that could potentially being doing business with north korea. you see such push on capitol hill with that in increasing sanctions. twin all this together with what we heard from secretary mattis this morning in london, where he was cheer he walear he wanted i diplomatic pressure. >> we're working with our allies and working diplomatically, including with those that we might be able to enlist in this effort to get north korea under control. but right now, it appears to be going in a very reckless manner in what its conduct is portraying for the future, and that's got to be stopped. >> report

joining me now, nbcews pentagon correspondent hans nichols, who is with us here in new york. e doing well. they're fighting like they never were before. is that truesome ? >> that is largely a function of they're getting into more dense areas and they have more targets. that's why we're seeing more civilian casualties. i think there have been a couple of important stories taking place. number we did hear from general votell saying we have a potential 460 iraqi deaths and this is since the battle for mosul began. we have some civilian casualties. we potentially did have the u.s. responsible for over 100 casualties. this is in mosul, a building was flattened. i think what's more interesting to me, though, after they said there was a fair chance the u.s. would be involved, you heard them consistently say you're not going to have any change in the rules as the u.s. continues what they're doing. >> so they're going to accept civilian casualties as just a product of war in this area? >> general townsend, the top general in iraq right now, told us at the pentagon the more responsibil

. >> i want to bring hans nichols in, at the pentagon to talk about the cia breach now disclosed by wikileaks. hans this is pretty extraordinary if you think of wikileaks and the position this puts the trump campaign -- president trump in. president trump, sean hannity, who seemed to be team wikileaks during the campaign, the tables may have turned. we're going to hear from jewel y julian assange in a little less than 30 minutes. what do we think about the new report that russia could be involved here? >> russia is a suspect, right. two intelligence fishls -- u.s. officials, it's in part because of wikileaks connection. they were so involved and there was an assessment by the intelligence community that wikileaks and russia were working hand in hand to reveal some of the clinton e-mails. we also know according to wall street journal that the fbi is joining in the investigation and finally, we think these documents actually are authentic and this cia was aware of a breach at the end of last year. so this investigation could have been ongoing for some time. it's important to note in the cyber s

hans nichols is in virginia covering president trump's visit. cynthia mcfadden has been reporting on what the raid in yemen actually did achieve. hans, let me start with you. president trump set to speak roughly an hour from now there. we will get the speech in a moment. what do we know about the u.s. air strikes targeting al qaeda positions in yemen. >> reporter: we have two stories as you alluded two. one we have air strikes in yemen. it's loud here, but excuse me, air strikes in yemen that came from both aircraft platforms as well as drones. and then we have this separate issue taking place in syria. it took place a couple of days ago. in syria, al qaeda is confirming that a top official was killed in what looks to be a cia drone attack. he is the number two in al qaeda. it's unclear what he was doing in syria. remember, in syria, you have some tension. you have some conflict between isis and al qaeda. those two terrorist organizations are competing for attention. they are competing for control. and what sort of scope they have. so it's intere

nbc's hans nichols joins us from the pentagon. hans, how significant is this for the u.s.they don't believe the diplomacy has worked and they are willing or even thinking about taking first action? >> katy, this is a new policy. not just the all options on the table which other presidents of the defense secretaries have said, but the fact that it was proceeded by this idea that the policy of strategic patience is no longer working. that to me indicates that this is a new policy and a break with the old one. it's also significant, he's amping up the rhetoric before he goes to china in some ways tillerson's going to go to china and say look, help us diplomatically, help with us sanctions. otherwise, i have authority, and i'm talking publicly about military first strike action. >> why does the u.s. need china? >> you need china to isolate north korea. north korea gets most of their coal from, trading partner, otherwise north korea is basically selling secrets to the iranians. that would be the rest of their economy. and building villages that you can see from the dmz with you

>> hans nichols for us there at the white house, hans, thank you. you can see on your screen there air force one touching down in orlando, florida. president trump visiting there this afternoon, he'll be visiting a local catholic school in his drive to promote school joyce. rehema ellis is there traveling with president. what can we expect from mr. trump this afternoon, rehema? >> reporter: i think you can expect the president to talk, if he does offer some comments, it will be in high praise of the use of taxpayer dollars to support children in private schools. that's the school he's visiting, a school of about 350 children. 300 of them are on scholarship programs using florida state tax credits in order to pay for their education. he's coming with his education secretary, betsy devos, as you know. she is a strong supporter of charters and vouchers, it's something she has been an advocate of, particularly in her home state of michigan, and she's gone around the country promoting it as well. we should tell you the traffic is starting to build up her

hans nichols is at the pentagon for us. hans, what do we know at this point?i have talked about this, i feel, every day this week. >> reporter: kate, there are two stories going on. one what the marine corps is doing to get out ahead of this problem. they were the first that encountered it because of this facebook page, marines united, where photos were shared and inappropriate comments made. across the entire service now, everyone is looking into it because of news reports about other, frankly, pornographic web pages where there are members that appear to be female military members in uniform and discussions about them. what we saw from the marine corps is, a, task force, b, acknowledgment they have cultural problems and, c, some frustration. listen to the frustration from general neller. >> what do you got to do to get in? i mean, come on, guys. let them do their job. and you do yours. and you know what, it will all work out. >> reporter: that is general, now commandant in the marine corps, talking about how females have bled with their male brethren. they s

right now i want to bring in hans nichols, he is at the white house. so hans, in terms of the response from this administration and from this white house to the new revelations about contacts between people in the trump circle and people in the russian government, what is the strategy coming out of the white house now? do you think they've addressed this as much as they need to? are they now pivoting or is there more of a more up their leave sleeves here? >> reporter: i might lead with that. i don't have that right now, steve. what i do have is from the white house briefing on air force one, they kind of attempted to deflect. and that deflection is talking about look, there are other people who met with russian officials, there's that photo out there, but in term what was we've heard for the principles was different about the trump strategy in this case is there's an acknowledgment and there's a recognition that senator now attorney general sessions did something not entirely accurate. not entirely -- wasn't entirely forthcoming. criticism from presiden

nbc's hans nichols has the latest from the pentagon. this is such a disturbing story. >> it's a disturbing story. secretary mattis has been informed about this. he knew about it himself, a former marine, before it broke. he hasn't received a formal update on it. he is through spokesmen calling it troubling. the question is how many active duty marines were actually involved. there's some 2500 comments on this facebook page. some of these comments, kate, are quite explicit, quite crude. as you mentioned, they're attached to some nude photos of fellow marines, in some cases, fellow service members. the overall facebook group, marines united, 30,000 participants. one challenge for investigators, this is a formal investigation by the ncis in the navy, one challenges will be figuring out just houma reasons participated and who was involved and in what capacity. one of the marines who took the pictures of one of the people, one of the marines at camp lejeune is no longer in the marine corps. the person we believe to be a contractor who posted

nbc's hans nichols is joining me from the pentagon. what happened next here?re does this go today, tomorrow, next week, next month? >> tomorrow in the house of representatives. the house will have a chance to grillle neller as well. today the commandant is at camp lejeune meet with marines. one of their main bases. in general what the marine corps is trying to do is get to the bottom of this by making sure more victims potentially come forward. the marines think there are about ten victims. the journalist who initially broke this story puts the number around 30. he's been the one that's been able to go inside that initial marines united facebook page and onto the google drive and take a look at some of these pictures. the marines said of the 30,000 marines and potentially retired marines and other service members, only 500 accessed and took a look at these pictures. what they need is more victims to come forward. they are pledging support, giving a lot of different avenues that they can come forward and so that they can start addressing this. but it's clear th

. >> hans nichols was inside the briefing room today. hans, what else did we miss in terms of drama or the lovefest we just sampled there? >> well, it's very clear that the white house thinks there's a lot more going on between president obama, michael flynn and jim comey. the president tweeted himself that question that nonanswer comey had on whether or not comey directly informed president barack obama about michael flynn being investigated by the russians. it seems as though the white house is getting tripped up and is convinced there's a lot of backdoor surveillance going on. surveillance of people like michael flynn, but they didn't do it directly under a fisa warrant, they somehow reached them through other means. that seems to be the line that they're parroting at the white house. that's the indication they still think that the obama white house potentially directed some of this surveillance of their team, which tells us, donald trump is not going to stand down from his claim about wiretapping in a lot of ways. we heard today doubl
