the pentagon correspondent hans nichols is in singapore with the latest. hans, what did secretary mattis have to say about the road ahead? >> reporter: well, mattis is not that optimistic about the road ahead. his quote was to expect a few bumps, that was just this morning. in general, what mattis is trying to do here is frame the parameters, say what is on limits and off limits. what is clearly off limits for the u.s. secretary of defense is removing and having part of the negotiations removing u.s. troops from south korea. so listen to how mattis said it when he was tempering expectations. >> our objective remains as stated by minister madura, the complete verifiable and irreversible denuclearization and the removal of all wmd on the korean peninsula. we can anticipate it best and bump by road to the negotiation. >> reporter: now, the idea that there would not be any sort of conversations about removing sanctions, lifting sanctions until there's the complete and verifiable denuclearization of the korean peninsula is something new. we have heard from presi

hans nichols is tracking the breaking developments at the pentagon. what do we know? >> received a request from the department of health and human services to make some sort of space for 20,000 unaccompanied migrant children. these are minors coming in. and to house them. now, there was a start potentially as early as july. next month, and go through to december. here's where the process is right now. hhs has asked the pentagon to look at facilities. they have already looked at four separate military facilities, military installations. i should note there is precedence for this. you will remember back in 2014 during the obama administration some 7,000 unaccompanied minors were held at military installations as a way to keep them safe. trump appears to be drastically increasing that or at least making a possibilities trying to plan for that contingency. here's a what we know about the memo first reported on by colleagues over at the coefficient. it came after trump announced the executive order on wednesday. it looks as if some sort of detention of unaccompanied minors

where we find our pentagon correspondent hans nichols watching all of this transpire as well and let folks know, hans, that you are there because the secretary of defense, james mattis is there. secretary mattis there, previously planned visit, but what more do we know, hans, about the preparations that are being made in that country ahead of this high-stakes summit? >> reporter: look, we know logistical conversations are continuing. the question is, it will all be likely overridden by what's happening inside the oval office. craig, the duration of that meeting inside the oval office matters. the longer, be the more likely they're having a substantive conversation and could be hashing out the very issues they hope to get final agreement in singapore. in terms of logistics of the summit here in singapore, they haven't select add location. at least haven't announced it. a city that's ready. has the capacity to host it and in about ten days the center of the world could be focused on singapore. it's about 1:25 in the morning here. the middle of the night. a 12-hour time difference. as we

that's where we have hans nichols who is traveling with secretary mattis. pick up on that, full, hans. where are they with the preparations? what are you hearing there? what's the reaction to what we just heard from the president a short time ago? >> chris, get used to this shot. it's going object the backdrop for the singapore summit. as the president int hadded perhaps multiple summits. he didn't say they would be in singapore. in terms of arrangements, logistics are taking place. there are a lot of venues here are well secured. there are aert have a of places around town where they can choose to do it. i suspect photoons will be a premium for this president. when we think of the advisors in there with president trump it is notable that john bolton was not in there. it's also notable that the president didn't necessarily consult for that long with mike pompeo. something we hear all across the government, especially at the defense department where a lot of times they have to implement and many times explain the president's foreign policy. this is the presi

hans nichols arrived on the scene in annapolis. we are looking for that press conference in just a couple of minutes. before then, let's find out what hans has. >> we spoke to one witness that said she heard several loud blasts. i asked her could it come from the a shotgun. she didn't quite know but she said the sheriff and the police were there within two minutes and evacuated everyone and had two groups of 50 or 60 people that were inside that building. the witness we spoke to was just above the building. she described the office space where the newspaper is as holding 20, 25 people. that's the top end of how many people potentially could have been inside here. as you can see, as far as the eye can see we are looking at police presence. it is a not just anne arundel county it's the stipulate of annapolis. there are hundreds of police cars. two helicopters overhead. there is a massive police response here. it's indication of how well this part of the country is prepared for it. it also gives you an indication the speed with which s

nbc's hans nichols is standing by. hans, maybe you can pick uphat part of the story for us. we've gotten mixed signals from this president about what exactly he wants, if he wants anything here, any sense what the white house's reaction to this is going to be? >> it is only going to increase their challenge, steve. just this morning when i was talking to an official here, they thought the real challenge would be in the senate. that's really been the president's position throughout, is that the senate is the heavy lift. when you look at this resounding defeat on the house side, that gives you a sense of just what their task is moving forward. of course, they are all the sort of challenges they have here at the white house, they also anticipate potentially a supreme court retirement from kennedy. i'll toss it back to you to see if you have anything more on that. >> we're waiting with everybody else to see what else comes in. but let me go back to garrett then on capitol hill on this. the idea of a path forward for republicans and for this administration and for democrats, for

for more, let's go right to nbc's hans nichols at the pentagon. what does this mean? >> the key word is suspending, not kabs lation. this is the pentagon getting in line with president trump who announced that these military drills would stop. the key thing to look for in this announcement is how far does it go? does it just have to do with military exercises on the korean pa numbers la or is it across the entire asian-pacific region? because so much of what the pentagon does is training. yes, it's a planning organization. it's a war fighting organization. as we see it in the middle east. fundamentally, it is a training organization. and that's why president trump's comments from singapore took so many aback here because what they do here is train. if you don't train, you don't have a ready force. that is the core of what they like to do here. >> how do you think allies like south korea are going to react to this? we heard from victor cha the morning after saying south korea was completely surprised by the president's statement. >> south korea has in the past suggeste

nbc pentagon correspondent hans nichols is also there. what did mattis say today?orter: mattis was laying down a hard line. he was saying there would be no sanctions relief, this idea of maximum pressure, although he didn't use those words, secretary of defense would stay in place until north korea agreed to complete and verifiable denuclearization. mattis said he expects a few bumps along the road, seemed to be not so optimistic. didn't share optimism that was widespread through the three day summit. previously he said discussion of u.s. troops in south korea would not be on the agenda. you see mattis stake out a hard line. he is scheduled to be back in washington, has a lunch with president trump monday. we'll see how this process goes forward. they have a lot of work to do on the ground in singapore. need to figure out just the protocol. who is going to arrive where, when, what sort of photo ops might they have. a lot of work for diplomats to do, but the strategic picture is the same, that is that president trump is insistent, moving ahead with the meeting. >> h

joining me now is nbc pentagon correspondent hans nichols. what's the latest on these military exercises, the so-called war games? would we suspend them? do we know if they'll actually be suspended? >> we've just heard from admiral harris. he's the president's nominee to be the new ambassador to south korea. he said you can have a suspension and give these a pause. major military exercises, to allow piece and allow the peace process to move forward a little bit. what we're expecting from the pentagon today, according to military officials, is formal guidance on just what it's going to look like, what this suspension is going to look like. we've been cautioned not to use the word cancellation because they always want to preserve here at the pentagon the ability to turn back these exercises. it looks like it's going to be named exercises. by that, i mean names like ufg. that's the most recent one. in the spring, you have full eagle. ali, you and i could get together on a long road trip and try to come up with names for all these exercises acros

stay with me, jim, and bring in hans nichols who is part of breaking coverage, and is at the scene. what are you seeing on the ground? >> reporter: we're seeing a massive police force, massive presence here trying to secure the area which they say they have. we basically know some of the outlines, but resetting quickly, five dead what police have confirmed. they walked away from that number, then reconfirmed it. they hinted, didn't say they were certain there were three injured. don't have an idea how many people were inside that newsroom. to set a scene for you, as far as the eye can see there are police cars. this is a wealthy part of the country. anne arundel county has expensive homes on the waterfront. you have a nordstroms department store there. they were taken across the street to lord and taylor. prosperous part of the country, many ex-military retired here. you get a sense there's a strong community and this newspaper was part of that community. i talked to one local and they said the nickname for it was the crab wrapper. they obviously wrap a lot of crabs in this part of
