and, the play was based on hansberry's own experiences.ters, the youngers, she grew up in a middle class black family in chicago. they moved into an all-white neighborhood, and were persecuted for it. hansberry was born in 1930 on the city's south side into a family deeply involved in the fight for civil rights. her father was a successful realtor who fought for better black housing. he won a case before the supreme court that helped end some discriminatory real estate practices like the ones they endured. in 1950, hansberry dropped out of college and moved to harlem, where she continued her family's legacy of activism. she called herself a revolutionary. she spoke at protest gatherings, marched on picket lines, and wrote for a progressive publication called “freedom.” but, while hansberry was outspoken on racial justice in america, she reckoned with her sexuality in private. for nine years, she was married to a man, robert nemiroff. and, though she was never “out” publicly, hansberry privately identified as a lesbian - at a time when homo

you know, and then with hansberry, let me just say with lorraine hansberry, she had extraordinary intellect and an extraordinary being. and as you say, she wrote for the letter. she wrote letters to the latter. she used the pseudonym course. she wrote short stories. and i do, as you say, close reading of some of the short stories show the level of internalized homophobia. yeah. and the very to me, they very, very, very powerful stories. but at the end of her life, she's obsessed with the last play, which is le blanc, that she's writing as she's dying, she, she's dying and she to finish this play and it is an it's about african liberation and one of the liberationist in the play is a gay african man. and he's not not only is not a pathetic figure, on the contrary, he's a revolutionary. he's hero. he takes up arms first, even it's his older brother who's the leader of the of the movement. and and it's it's a extraordinarily moving play and and to credit nemeroff for her former husband you know who was the executor of her of her estate he was faithful to the play's text and this gay black figu

bring it out to an audience that hasn't seen it >> yeah, it's been really, really special lorraine hansberrythe sun. but this is a really different play about a really different group of people, and it's a piece that is so much lesser known. it's been really, really special to get to bring it to life with this cast. our director, annie kauffman, did the play back in 2016 in chicago, and it's just been the best it's been so awesome to hear from so many people who were familiar with her work from "raisin" about how this play has moved them, and also people who didn't know her work at all and this being their first introduction to the force that was lorraine hansberry >> seth: you mentioned the cast. your co-star, oscar isaacs, one of our favorites here as well. oscar isaac, excuse me and how was it working with him? were you familiar with his work? >> yes, yes.
