commissioner hardeman? >> yeah, very briefly. you don't want to -- i mean, everybody -- hundreds of folks spoke yesterday on tv and radio about mayor lee, but the one thing i didn't hear was ferocious loyalty. when this commission had the finger pointed out it, rightfully so, by all unions, the variety of 798 and the rest of the ethnic unions, everybody was pointing the finger at us, and the chief. when mayor lee called us into his office, and there was a number of meetings -- like i said publicly, he blamed us, chief, and he blamed this commission, and he called us back. how's it going? how's the chief? how's he doing? is there something that needs to be fixed so we brought up all these things, and so did the chief. but the one thing he did was he never publicly blamed us. privately, he chiued us oewed . there was very lengthy meeting, telling us what we needed to keep the performance, but what we needed, he just gave us, and the board of supervisors -- so that's the one thing i would say. this man was the most loyal person you

commissioner hardeman. >> thank you, mr. president. yeah, i'd like to call you tony, but i think mr. boone. >> tony's fine. mr. boone is my dad. >> any way, good comments by fellow commissioners, but my concern is these wildfires, and particularly, like the fire up in the north bay, which is not just vegetation burning. >> correct. >> which you understand and everybody involved in firefighting understands what you're dealing with. >> right. >> as far as chemicals and stu stuff. but what happened in the north bay is every imaginable type of carcinogenic burning in houses and structures and businesses that really exposed -- exposed a lot of firefighters to unusual chemicals that they're not normally expected to have on a wildfire. they're trained to -- like, we only have 10% of the department -- less than that -- trained. i would hope that that number would increase because with the amount of wild fires, particularly down in southern california now. i don't know how many the chief has decided to send down there, but i know we've sent som

commissioner hardeman. >> thank you, mr. president. you're very, very energetic and well-received around town because you are everywhere. i know you didn't mention one of the -- you went to the wake, i went to the funeral. but that's when you didn't bring up the hints [inaudible] and his brother was a firefighter. but anyway, talking about president cleveland's retirement luncheon. he did a great short speech there. that was a good one. [laughter] my most memorable moment with president cleveland was a 1995, i just got a hot -- at the end of the yore i got a hot camaro. i was going through my mid life crisis. i wanted a corvette and got a camaro. anyway, i'm giving you a ride home in the new camaro and we were at a board of supervisors meeting. i was working for my union and you had just started and you got so excited about the car, you said god i just love this car! and took your two hands and you were sitting in the passenger seat and hit the dash board. i'm thinking oh, god! the air bag is going to come out! [laughter] fortunately,

[ inaudible ] >> move by commissioner hardeman, do i have a second? >> second. >> second from vice president nakajo. all approving? all in opposition? >> clerk: environmental health and safety. director anthony boone to provide overview of duties, current findings and expectations for 2018. >> welcome, mr. boone. >> thank you. >> good morning, everyone. good morning commissioners, chief. thank you for having me this morning. first, let me say it's an honor and a privilege to be part of the department and provide an overview of environmental health and safety for the department. i think the over arching philosophy that i bring to the department is to use all my skills and resources and knowledge to make an inherently dangerous job safer, if that makes any sense. i was talking with chief hayes-white yesterday about firefighters are not at a fire scene at all days, all times, but safety is a 24/7 job, so paying attention to things in the fire house and even off-the-job safety is critical to maintaining a healthy firefighting force, so it is my over that
