amanda hari kron 4 news you and good luck getting your hands on those covid tests. they're very hard to find these days. >> in the south bay, a jury convicting theranos founder elizabeth holmes on charges of wire fraud. and conspiracy. the verdict came down late yesterday afternoon after 7 days of deliberations in about 3 months of the case going on. holmes was convicted on 4 of the 11 counts she faced for defrauding hundreds of millions of dollars from investors through her company, theranos. prosecutors say holmes promised to revolutionize health care with a blood testing system that turned out to be deeply flawed. defense attorney paula canny says holmes own testimony may have helped her avoid a conviction on all 11 counts. >> in some instances. her testimony helped or i think that the jury believe that in, for instance, is she had a good faith belief of the truth of what she was saying. i actually thought whatever they decide. >> that it would be. >> all guilty role not guilty. i didn't really think i didn't expect that there would be a split. >> now, holmes did

amanda hari has more. >> the meteorologists. we're starting off the wet season in a good place. but he says we're definitely not out of the woods when it comes to the drought. >> it's a great start who still need a bit more. just one week separates these 2 maps from the u.s. drought monitor the one of the left is red signifying extreme or exceptional drought. the one on the right is much more orange showing significant improvement certainly what period that we've really going back through of legal part of october and even heading into december. we've gotten quite a bit of rainfall. that's helped us out. a good deal. the state has improved from nearly 80% of it being an extreme or exceptional drought to just about 33%. it's both good and some other impacts as well. meteorologist with the national weather service. sean miller says, well, we need the waters. sometimes we get too much at once. you can see that here in this citizen video from oakland on christmas morning. it also resulted in snow that closed roads in the sierra nevad

amanda hari kron 4 news. >> in the east bay berkeley unified says nearly 24 staff members will not be returning to work today after testing positive for covid in a message to parents. the superintendent says that of the 12,000 covid tests given out to students and staff just over 5,000 results have been reported of those 71 students reported testing positive and 21 staff members as of last friday, 23 teachers have reported that they would not be going back to work today. anyone who has tested positive since december. 24th are in isolation and not allowed to return to campus. over the weekend. a number of bay area school districts handed out free covid-19 testing kits for students and workers before heading back to school. now in the east bay. hundreds of cars were lined up outside kennedy high and put no high schools to pick up the at-home test kits. officials with west contra. costa county schools say with people returning after the holiday break. they wanted to make sure everyone was safe to avoid an outbreak. they say everyone is required to report the results to the school distric

amanda hari kron, 4 news. thank you so and and governor gavin newsom has now activated the national guard to help with covid-19 testing. >> and the crisis that's happening there here in california. more than 103,000 new cases of covid were just reported on friday. did millions of people in the state say they just can't even get tested to find out if they have covid or not. so more than 200 members of the guard will be deployed across 50 testing sites to help boost the staffing levels and make the tests more easily accessible. so here's video of the members who are assisting a covid testing site at deer valley high school in antioch. and additional sites will be opening up in alameda contra costa, napa, santa clara and santa cruz counties. they are all expected to receive some assistance from the national guard in the coming days. but information on those locations has not yet been released. and also the white house is working with the u.s. postal service to distribute millions of covid home test kits to anyone

amanda hari kron, 4 news. >> kron four's coverage of the colorado fire continue is tonight. 13 agencies have now responded to the fire and the red cross is offering to help folks impacted by it at the carmel middle school. >> cal fire spokesperson cecile juliette is joining us here in alive. during.crawford is 9 o'clock tonight to give us an update on the fire. where are we with trying to get the numbers kind of narrow down? the acreage is sort of fluctuated as well as the containment. is it still at 700 acres? 35 1% contained. and why is that changed so much over the past couple days? >> yes, those numbers are still the same and we were able to confirm with an infrared flight and our boots on the ground. they got together and they determined that better mapping that. it is actually 700 acres at this point, which is, of course, good news. and it is 35% contained. so we are growing those containment lines to say we're the obviously that is good news that you guys have been able or that the number of acres have been lowered. >> our home still being threatened at this point. and if so, can

amanda hari kron, 4 news. >> nationwide, the number of new covid cases is declining. however, exports were experts warn we have a long way to go before the surge is over. after reaching a high of more than 800,000 cases nationwide on saturday, the 7 day average has fallen 8% as of yesterday. that's according to johns hopkins university. >> well, new cases maybe down hospitalizations and deaths are rising nationwide. there are 26,000 covid patients in icus. the cdc reports that in the second week of february, they're projecting we may see more than 5,000 deaths per day. >> city leaders in san francisco, they've confirmed that covid cases are down after seeing an average of more than 2100 new cases. i new covid cases every day this month. the numbers have plateaued. they are dropping while protective measures are needed for several more weeks as cases and transmission rates remain high. san francisco is refocusing its attention on how to move forward and live alongside the virus. kron four's dan kerman has details. >> as san francisco enters the 3rd year of the covid-19

amanda hari kron. 4 new at 8 tonight. oakland police say they are investigating 4 shootings that happened overnight. >> the first happened around 8 o'clock friday night near 4th and foothill avenue. officers say they found a person shot at the scene. the victim now recovering in stable condition. the second shooting happened an hour later at 57th and international boulevard. officers say the victim drove themselves to the hospital. also listed in stable condition. the 3rd happened around 11. 30 police say that one happened near 98th in be street. officers say they were notified after that victim showed up at the hospital and at midnight, officers were called to a home near 30th and san pablo avenue for another shooting. the victim was found with several gunshot wounds. medics took them to the hospital in stable condition. so far investigators have not released any details on the suspect. anyone with information on one or all of the shootings now urged to call oakland police. but you should. police meanwhile, are investiga

amanda hari kron. 4 news, even though some local health agencies say that omicron cases have. pete researchers are considering whether to add another booster shot to the recommended schedule of vaccines. >> people with weakened immune systems are already approved for up to 4 doses of the vaccine. but a 4th shot has not yet been recommended for the general public. an expert with uc davis health says it is not feasible for the public to expect to get a booster shot every 6 months and says it is not clear yet whether the current vaccines and boosters well even protect against future variants. >> calling the first 2 as the primary series and then the 3rd doses of booster dose. you know, it's possible that maybe 3 doses initially are the appropriate primary immunization schedule. and then the boosters will then be done on a yearly or every other year basis. we just don't know. we're just learning as we go along. >> israel has approved a 4th shot as a booster, although its research is suggesting it might not be enough for the omicron variant, british researchers and the cdc have rea
