there was much better and he had a sister who died in infancy in harlan, kentucky and jack gibbs every sunday had to walk his mother up a hill to the segregated cemetery so his mother could put roses as a flower, roses and flowers at the gravesite of jack gibbs infant sister who had died and i went to harlan, kentucky and walked up that hill and then i walked back down that hill and it hit me the reason jack gibbs cared so much about those kids is because he did not want to metaphorically leave any of them alone on a hill and so he kept him out of trouble and he was just an amazing figure. now, you have to realize almost none of these players had ever had anyone in their family who had gone to college but the basketball coach, bob hart, had served in world war ii. he is white. >> he was at normandy. >> yeah, bob hart at normandy. he was upset by the way the black soldiers had been treated during the war and so when he came out of the war and went back to college he wrote his senior thesis in college on the unfair treatment of the black soldier in world war ii. this is an 1946 -- >> before the army was desegregated.
