it helped the fillmore earner the reputation as harlem of the west. it attracted a lot of incredible folks in mucus to armstrong and a number of others. and when the redevelopment agency threatened to raise the fillmore the folks at that time, gathered to save this and several other historic buildings. the marcus building was raised off it's foundation and taken around the corner. since it's move the building has housed marcus bookstore the oldest black bookstore in the nation and it's center for black intellectualism. it's hosted so many incredible fingers like rosa parks and others. it's iconic and appropriate that the historic preservation has been asked to keep this historic plays. only the occupants in that building a historic i think the buildings age and narrow escape disproves that. i would remind i thought national regulatory that the commission uses the criteria says a building may receive historic landmark status because it has a board pattern of our history or are sobered with persons significant in our past. without question this building

it has been a pleasure to work with harlem and countless managers before you. some of us keep count. >> how many? eight or nine? >> oh, you underestimate the count. but it has been a pleasure to work with harlem and i'm enjoyed working with steve, and michael and today, sharon who is now retired and michelle in her place. many attorneys in the city attorney's office and countless. it has been a pleasure and with a number of other staff people, management levels, people with offices and people who work in the field, it has been a true honor and a treat. in thinking back about my career, the first time i met your staff career was in 1967. i was at fonsaca and in 1977 i got became a consultant and met more people and in 1984 gene killager was a general manager and wooed me to work in general service. at the beginning of my career i never even thought of working in the public sector. and i never thought that my introduction to that would be the city and county of san francisco. it's kind of a trial by fire in some ways but it has been rewarding. extremely rewarding

say which ones they are and it competes for my favorite painting in the exhibition it is view of harlem with bleaching grounds in the foregrounds and one of the most important innovations for the 17th century, dutch landscape painters was the way that they approached the sky. for any of you who have traveled to the netherlands you know that there is a low horizon line and i have been told that the dutch people and i can be corrected. that they call their clouds the dutch mountains because the landscape is so low that really you get these massive clouds in the sky and that is the kind of important topography to talk about. this is another example by the same artist and it is a winter scene, and as i move through these images of different paintings from various national schools. i don't want to talk too much over them but to let you feel how the atmosphere and the mood is changed by the different kinds of clouds that the artists have chosen to depict. and i wanted to also var clearly indicate it was interesting when putting together this powerpoint, i don't typically like to put any words
