harley's future may not look like its past.t's move to a newer ceo, the european cover is on air france klm. new guy. joel: brand-new guy, canadian. first non-french ceo to run air france. we had some fun with his cover. it is really iconic. it is really about air france needing a revolution and this might be the guy to do it because the last guy -- it was almost like brexit where the last ceo put his whole reputation on the line with the referendum and employees ousted him. it is so french. taylor: there is so much turmoil within france and klm and there is also turmoil with issues they have to face externally hitting the airline industry, and you were able to capture that. joel: this is a company that at one point, outfits were made by dior, the first class meals were insane and they still are, and yet that business model does not stand up when low-cost carriers are basically owning the skies. on top of that, as we know with all things french, there are labor unions that are incredibly powerful. that has made this business mo

harley davidson, very clever. chris: we had all this imagery to work with with harley. you have the bikes, the bikers. ofgravitated to the idea playing with the biker vest and we took some of these classic andey patches or motifs flipped them to be morally -- millennial focused or where hardly needs to push its audiences to keep selling bikes. image looks very classic harley davidson stereotype and then when you look the individual patches, it has the future growth where they need to be with the millennials. together fun putting what the different pieces would be. it was a fun project to work on. forn: it must have been fun everybody to work off each other and try to one up each other on idea.st clever the eagle with the avocado was my favorite. cover, yoully on the get one good joke and this one we had several. europe,oving over to you had fun turning a classic french phrase on its head. chris: yeah, and this came from one of the editors. different bunch of laugh lines, but this worked best with the story. we had beautiful photos on the tarmac at charles de gaulle and

so those were some of harley earl's contributions. he really was a maverick stylist who pushed the envelope of how cars look, even up until today. i want to look at another maverick. does anybody recognize this guy? this is preston tucker. i would consider him a maverick auto maker. and so who was he? he was an inventor and he loved automobiles. he had a workshop, a machine shop in michigan, which was outside of detroit. and he had speed. he loved speedy cars. and in fact, as an inventor who loved speedy cars, this was one of his inventions. he designed a tank that would go 117 miles per hour. he tried to interest the u.s. army in it. they didn't find a use for a tank that would go that fast. but, he anticipated in the post world war ii era, americans would hunger for new cars. new cars that would be fast, that would offer innovation, and so in december 1945, the magazine that is no longer around had a feature on a car that he promised to put into production. he called it the tucker torpedo. thousands of americans wrote him letters. t

>> harley-davidson. he was criticized.payment back, it would have been one of the most lucrative deals he made. >> i'm unfamiliar with that. getting to the substance, this is a regulatory filing where harley-davidson talks about the fact that its business would not be sustainable. it says it's the only susta sustainable option to move this production, which is what a lot of automakers do -- they make cars in europe they sell in europe. they make cars in asia that they sell in asia. this is not the first company to do that. case in point, you sell these trump t-shirts. did you bring one with you? >> no. your producer asked me to send one. i was happy to. they forgot to mention our staple is our patch. this is made in virginia beach, virginia. we sell t-shirts made in america is not very affordable for the bikers. >> that's an interesting point. so people know the pictures we're showing you on the side sell trump t-shirts, bike foers trump. they are made this haiti. the reason you make them in haiti because it's unaffordable

harley earl lengthened and lowered cars. it used to be the rear seat passengers sat above the rear axel and that was a very uncomfortable and bumpy position to be in. now they sat cradled between the two axles and so it was a much more comfortable ride, but it gave the whole car a more long and streamlined feel to it. it's more aerodynamically styled. it's a much better looking car. this was a huge contribution to the way cars looked that harley earl achieved. you could really tell the difference in an antique car, an older model car, and the design that harley earl started to impose on cars. so there were other contributions. i've written here he introduced some gaudy changes as well that were less fortunate. he, for example, was enamored of jet fighters, the 1950s was the rocket age of the jet age. people were excited about jet engines, as was harley earl. he was particularly attracted by a lockheed fighter, the p-38. he had the idea to try to introduce some features of jet fighters to cars. so this was a car he designed,

for me bliss is being on a harley davidson. his passion began with the cover of a magazine for german motorbike fans called easy rider it featured the harley why glide for your gun who was then seventeen it was love at first sight as his pocket money wasn't enough to buy one he said about building his own chopper. it became a labor of love to help me through i felt like easy rider except it took a couple of years to get a real harley i had to wait until one thousand nine hundred eighty five before i could afford one. but even that bike wasn't enough for him he still dreamt of owning a genuine why glide. it took twenty five years for me to find it's one of just a thousand produced i bought it in the u.s. state of kentucky and back in germany i could finally enjoy the sensation i've been dreaming of riding a harley davidson wide glide an easy rider style that's what. it was while pursuing that dream that you're going to became an avid collector of the classic bikes among the forty plus models in his garage is this one nine hundre

so harley is now making those bikes.e u.s., obviously young people do ride motorcycles, but a different type. there is an adventure bike that is really popular. they are available for on and off-road riding, and up until -- well, they are not on sale yet currently, harley does not make one. they have designed one and i think it will go on sale in 2020, but they had to really get in on this market. scarlet: they are a little bit late to that effort, because their rivals moved ahead of them. part of the story deals with how harley davidson recognized that the ground was shifting underneath them. i did not realize they did not do research, they operated on their got. -- gut. claire: they did a little bit of research, but they have had the same type of rider, the man that was in his 20's in the 1960's, so they knew what their customer base was for a long time and they didn't need to do very much. they are still the top motorcycle brand in the country. and i would talk to people who write about motorcycles, who run the magazi

ashley: poor oh, harley.ook at spotify, they with actually skip ads to better personalize the experience. are they going to make money if no one listens to the ads? what do you think, susan? >> spotify is doing interesting things because they were in brooklyn last week tieing up with samsung create more of an experience at home but i completely agree with you, they don't charge for ads, how do they make money? , yeah, how do you pay your artists because they want to be paid. ashley: yeah, they should be. >> tens of millions of people to sign up for paid option, the ad-supported option is a lot bigger, i use the ad-supported action and works pretty well, i guess, in our business we obviously like subscription revenue, in their business -- [laughter] >> it really helps. so in their business maybe it can work better with mostly ad supported, i don't know. ashley: we will see, interesting concept. >> maybe the companies pay up for it, you want to tie up with spotify you pay them. ashley: all right, let's get back

ahea harley-davidsn today in the market.hris, your take on the boycott. >> we take it seriously, this is public relations debacle the way that harley-davidson has handled this, they have been planning this move for many years now as common knowledge in biker feel,, the leadership they now have and their ceo, was but 7 years ago they bought a motorcycle company in europe, then later went belly up, they lost billions. then not only that, their ceo quoted in a financial publication after the rnc and chief cleave and dnc is philadelphia, he said, i am paraphrasing. he said, he didn't think that either side had anything to offer. that does not sound like a man who was uninformed with biker community, 9 of 10 were supporting president at-this-point. liz: this is about the eu doing retaliatory tariffs on steal, harley-davidson said it will wipe out nearly half of its quarterly profits, that the problem for it. they say it is san economic reasons, what do your fellow bikers say about this fight. >> they see president trying to give

you know some of them are boycotting harley-davidson. harley-davidson now between something of a rock and a hard place. on one hand i believe they misrepresented themselves, i think they have been dise disen- blaming their woes on the tariffs, they have a plan in australia, the size of market in america has shrunk by 50%, i think they calculated, that another issue how much president is pushing on this. >> i think terrific, i wish he would focus on it, make it emphasis of his work in this area, idea of having zerotaryives or import taxes -- zero tariffs or import taxes i call them, that is a ground breaking vision, i wish he would push, that instead we get caught up with this product and harley here and that company there. and it really idea is zero tariffs zero barriers that is a shiny city on a hill idea, i wish high would pu push that. rather than little squabbles. charles: i think he is pushing that fell like he pushed that with eu, a lot of surprised how quickly they agreed to sort of work to a quick resolution rather than fighting

whether you ride an indian or a harley.ud to represent the mothership, as it were, especially in this age. and yes, i did want to kind of test the perceptions. and the first guy who rented me my harley came up and said, are you from cnn? he said, tell don lemon and anderson cooper i think they're national hero. but i caught it from the other side too. it's part of the polarized nature of what's going on here. these folks love every tweet that come from the president, the ones that send his fact checkers into a froth. they eat it up. when you see the fervent supporters in the presidential approval rating, a lot of them are riding around here. >> when you talk about the tweet, i can't help but think about lebron james and that tweet this weekend and the racial divide and the way the president has played to his base on these culture war issues. did that come up in discussion? >> reporter: not really. and i want to make it clear that, you know, this place is -- south dakota is 85% caucasian. most of the riders come from states

so harley, there's problems. >> yeah. this is the law of unintended consequences.n't what the president wanted to have happen. on the other hand, he's facing similar problems from harley from other parts of american industry that has been hurt by the tariffs. agriculture farmers and agriculture businesses hurt by tariffs that china put on their goods as a result of the tariffs on chinese products from the steel companies, aluminum companies, particularly in the u.s., some of whom get their products, components for their products or supplies from canada and they're seeing prices go up. so the president is contending with a lot of input from business that session the tariffs are having unintended consequences, harley-davidson is the latest, some of this may have been intended anyway. they may have started building motorcycles abroad. they've been doing so for years in brazil. some of this may have been in the works. they're given good cover to shift even more broad by a result of the tariffs. >> shepard: many are aware that the second largest military in all of nato

meanwhile president trump is putting pressure on harley—davidson. boycotting harley—davidson over plans to shift production overseas. the chief executive told cnbc elliott that while harley—davidson has manufactured engines for the last 115 years that the trump administration tariffs meant that the motorbikes could be twice as expensive. before we go it is a new week with lots of things to look forward to on the economic calendar. here is what we have caught. retail sales in china for the month ofjuly and industrial production. these indicators should tell us in theory at people are spending at how factories are doing. mid—week we have china's home prices date which will tell us if the government's two yearcampaign to curb will tell us if the government's two year campaign to curb speculation in property prices is working. later in the week, japan will release its trade date on thursday. all of this of course coming on the backdrop of potential tariffs coming from the us and the us— china trade war on the same day in fact that malaysia will release
