point to that i talk about very briefly in the book is some work by a colleague of mine named harper keenan, who's a scholar of social studies and one of the things that he did in his research and that i think is just an amazing example of this kind of critical analysis. is he compared in the curriculum of social studies curriculum in the state of california? how often in acts of violence of native people against colonizers were discussed? and then how often acts of violence of colonizers against native people were discussed and then compared those to the actual historical record. and what he found is that in textbooks, it is far more likely, far more common for young people to learn about acts of violence, of native people attacking settlers, even though in the actual historical record, those things happened less often. right. and so, again, it's one of the ways in which we are telling the story of this country to young people and we are normalizing these things at a time when they're very vulnerable, when they don't necessarily have the opportunity to seek outside sources. right. they're
