a few weeks ago, general manager harrington and i visited a number of our project sites, and we wereastonished by the amount of progress in the field, and i wanted to share some of what we saw. this is a picture that you will not be able to see once this project is completed. it is the alameda west portal with the project connects to the coast range tunnel. the contractor will be installing the piping across the calaveras fault zone, and will start tunneling under alameda creek. we have completed three of the shutdowns required for the project, which includes a lot of our scheduling risk, and we are on track to essentially complete this project by september 2011. this shows the installation of the 72-inch baking division pipeline 5. that segment is now 27% complete as it makes its way through the residential area. work on that project this summer has focused on completing improvements across schoolyards and creeks, and we are actually conducting worked on that segment at 12 different sites simultaneously to facilitate the work. similar work is taking place on the peninsula as we go a

done down on 19th avenue and then the significant work that will be disproportionately certed by harrington, down caesar chavez will be extraordinary. those will be the final three of those nine great streets projects. leland and sam bruno were among the last two. we're celebrating this -- this today, but we're also celebrating those that we completed in the past number of months and last few years. why does this matter? you'll hear in a second why this matters. creates a sense of place. a streetscape with the neighborhood and it com -- in a completely different way. it encourages and enlivens a pedstrone flow and -- pedestrian flow and sense of community. it slows people down. i have been here 300 times, if you think i'm exaggerating, i have not. i spent too much time. there's never too much time, but a lot of time at the sunny dale housing projects. the first few years i was mayor, i was down here for the wrong reasons, that was because of the struggles and frustration we had to deal with the issue of crime and violence and coming down back and forth, almost on a weekly basis to visit the

ed harrington, our general manager, has some announcements to make. >> as you know, the first announcement was that we have selected a general manager for external affairs. that position was vacated earlier this year when laura left. if you recall, we were changing the position to not only be in charge of relations and communications, but also take the lead on environmental sustainability issues and the community benefits jobs discussions we have been having. we did a search. i am pleased to announce the result is that commissioner juliet ellis is the new general manager for external affairs for the puc. [applause] we were able to convince her that four to eight hours a month was not enough. welcome, and thank you very much for accepting our offer. commissioner ellis: thank you to the fellow commissioners, the staff, and the community partners. part of what makes the position so attractive is the ability to work on this more than eight hours a month. i look forward to continuing to work in this different role. >> i would like to add to the general manager -- this is brilliant.
