scott harrington, and more than 400 of them were tested today for hiv and hepatitis. they are among thousands of patients that may have been exposed to hepatitis or hiv through harrington's office. susan candiotti is in tulsa with more. >> reporter: hundreds of patients lined outside the health department to be tested after dental inspectors found deplorable conditions at the office of scott harrington, an oral surgeon. he was using expired drugs and dental instruments that were rusty, and all of this began when a patient tested positive for hiv and hepatitis c, and he later tested negative for hiv, but they are worried about cross-examination. they are angry and worried, and we talked to one of his patie s patients. >> those are really hard things to live with. if i get sick, i could be sick for a long time, you know. i just -- it just freaks me out a little knowing that this could kill me. >> do you think he should be charged criminally? >> if all of this turns out to be the case i don't think he should be allowed to practice anymore. you know, as far as criminal ch

harrington. he's practiced for some 36 years. this is from the year he got his license, 1977. health officials say the trouble all started when one of his patients tested positive for hiv and hepatitis c despite showing no warning signs. it's important to note he may only be positive for help sites c only -- hepatitis c only according to later lab results. they combed through the dentist's office. that's when they found a slew of contamination issues. they tell us there were outdated drugs including one with an expiration date of 1993. dental instruments that had turned rusty. inspectors said the dentist said those aside for patients he knew cached infectious disease. they added his office is not properly stirlizin sterilizing s equipment. he told the inspectors to talk to the staff saying they take care of that, i don't. he's no longer practicing. dr. harrington involuntarily closed his office ahead of a hearing scheduled for next month when he could lose his license for could do. jonathan hunt

scott harrington remains closed this morning after he voluntarily surrendered his dental license, ands now cooperating with state health authorities. beginning today, thousands of his patients will undergo blood tests at this public clinic to determine if they have contracted blood-borne illnesses such as hiv and hepatitis-c. >> every patient assumes when they enter a dental office that things are being done per the standard and the law. and unfortunately, in this situation, that was not the case. >> reporter: health inspectors called harrington's office the perfect storm for infection. in a 17-count complaint, the state board of dentistry accuses dr. harrington, seen here in an earlier photo, of being a menace to public health, after one of his patients tested positive for hepatitis-c. inspectors say harrington's clinic had rusty equipment, illegally allowed dental assistants to perform iv sedation, and reused needles and drug vials. according to the complaint, one of those vails expired 20 years ago and a device used to sterilize instruments had not been tested in six years. >> he s

kpix 5 reporter elissa harrington is at the bay bridge toll plaza with new census data about so-called mega-commuters. i can't say i'm surprised. >> reporter: yeah. i would say just about everybody who drives over the bay bridge every morning probably is not surprised to learn we're not just commuters in the bay area, we're mega- commuters. so we have the worst commute in the united states. it really can get ugly as drivers make their way through the maze to try to get into san francisco. these latest statistics were put out by the u.s. census bureau. the bay area tops the list. megacommuters travel 90 minutes or longer just to get 50 miles. in san francisco the peninsula and east bay, more than 2% of full-time workers were mega- commuters. in santa clara county 1.9%. and we are followed by new york and washington, d.c. in new york about 1.9% are mega- commuters and washington, d.c. 1.89%. in most other major cities, less than 1% are mega- commuters. so we have about 4 times as many here and as i mentioned it takes about an hour and a half just to go 50 miles here during rush hour. wel

kpix 5 reporter elissa harrington is live in santa rosa with new details. >> reporter: that santa rosa police department and district attorney's office are handling the investigation. they are in the process of interviewing witnesses to try and determine why deadly force was used. a toyota camry window blown out was towed from odd fellows park in guerneville around 3:00. the driver a kidnapping suspect was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies almost 16 hours earlier. police say the victim's text messages led to her rescue. a captain in the santa rosa police department says a man in san rafael received an alarming text around 10:30 last night. >> the woman who was texting him was reporting to him that she was concerned for her safety and being driven to sonoma county against her will. >> reporter: she also provided a description of the car. the friend called 911 and santa rosa sheriff's deputies spotted the vehicle on guerneville road. the driver led them on a 10- mile-high speed chase. >> the deputies tried on two occasions to use spike strips to disabled the vehicle and end the pursu
