it was not clear that harry reid had the entirety of his caucus. within his own caucus, because he had such a large majority in the senate, independence and self-described socialist, in the middle they became the first democrats to vote against their party's nominee for the supreme court since 1968. it is something hard for him to corral, even harder still to use another republican in the numbers were not there. he confirmed yesterday that when they come back in september he will try again, but it is hard to see how the path to get to 60 votes gets easier after august. remember last year with all of the tea party rallies and tell all meetings, people coming out against health-care. maybe that is one of the reasons they did not want to have this vote, it could overshadow some of those legislative victories that they have had. they did get unemployment insurance passed finally, and i think that if they had had this energy bill vote, i do not know that they would have tested. and i do not think they wanted to risk starting up with an electorate that i

welcome to our program, tonight we continue our look at president obama and his presidency with john harris, editor-in-chief of politico. >> his great success in 2008 was he transcended the internal divide in the democratic party. these questions that most democratic presidents, presidential candidates get. hey, are you a new democrat, a so-called d.l.c. democrat, or are you more traditional old-line liberal? he said those questions are irrelevant. i'm barack obama. he united the party around his personal story and, of course, around the democratic party's disdain for president bush and that was enough. he never defined himself in a philosophical or ideological way. that was great in the campaign. i think it doesn't work as effect ily in governance.

harry reid has a ceiling on his support. what we know for sure is the makeup of the senate next year will be completely different. some of these candidates will emerge as winners. it will change the dynamic. tavis: when you say completely different, are you suggesting democrats want to use -- want to lose the senate? >> we will find out. i spent some time in wisconsin. he know if senator feingold -- if he is in trouble a lot of democrats are in trouble. it is too early to say ed democrats will lose control. republicans would need to win in california and washington state. even if democrats hold their majority, it will be much smaller. there will be at least a handful of new senators who will be representing the tea party movement, some of this unrest in. it will be different. the senator from south carolina will not stand alone as a rabble rouser. there will be many others joining him. it will be a moment of clarity for the republican party. i think they make up will be different. tavis: your message sounds in direct contrad
