authorities say that he walked up behind harris county deputy darren goforth last night right after goforth had finished fueling his car with gas. without warning, opened fire, shooting him in the head, in the back. goforth fell on the ground and authorities say miles continued to hover over him and continued firing. goforth ended up dying at the scene. authorities called it an assassination, execution-style murder. one of the hardest parts for authorities in that area is they say they still don't know what his motive was. >> the assumption is he was a target because he wore a uniform. at this moment we found no other motive or indication that it was anything other than that. >> reporter: the sheriff said earlier today he's quite aware of the movement, black lives matter. he says that in this case, cop lives matter, that all lives matter. in the press conference just a couple minutes ago, we also learned that based on a ballistic test, they matched the murder weapon, a large hand gun that they evidently found in miles' possession to the crime scene. we also have learned that deputy goforth

that saturday night and sunday night, the harris county community came out for law enforcement in a huge way. saturday night was a prayer vigil for deputy goforth and sunday was a prayer walk. and people from all races, from all around the county came. over a thousand both nights came to support law enforcement. that is what houston's harris county is about. this crime is not going to divide us. this crime is going to unite us. >> that is the district attorney talking about two events over the weekend that drew people in large number around a thousand people on saturday night at the gas station where the shooting occurred. and more than a thousand last night who marched in a local church to that gas station. in the meantime funds have been set up. fundraising drives have sprung up to support the family of the fallen deputy. he left behind a wife and two children. an online account has raised about $75,000 and organizers of a separate cash drive tell me this afternoon they have been able to raise around $76,000. and funeral services are planned for friday at the local church. that church

you heard devon anderson the district attorney in harris county talk about the 15 shell casings found at the scene. this handgun recovered from the suspect's garage holds 14 bullets in the clip and one in the chamber, 15 shell casings found there surrounding the body of guerin of darren goforth. meaning this suspect loaded the entire rounds of the gun into the back of this officer. he was for all intents and purposes blindsided. this killing, captured on surveillance video, also a witness saw what happened and phoned into police. we're learning more about how they were able to track down that ford pickup truck he was driving. according to investigators there was distinctive markings on that car including a white cooler in the back of the flat bed, an after-market hitch attached to that red ford pickup truck. they did a background search on it brianna and were able to track it nearby the shooting where this happened. when investigators showed up, miles was not there. he showed up inside the home, he was questioned, brought into custody and later charged with the deputy's murder. briann
