actor harrison ford crashed his plane on a golf course. suffering from minor trauma after the crash. he was alert and conscious when he left the scene. nbc news and variety are reporting that ford was piloting a vintage two seater plane when he lost control and landed. there was blood all over the actor's face. >> reporter: benefitted from having bystanders nearby. he was rescued by bystanders. his condition is reported to be fair moderate. he has moderate trauma. he's alert conscious. he's been taken to a local hospital. they they're still waiting to sort of assess how he's doing. he was the solo occupant board the plane. one employee said he had blood on his face. one thing i can tell you about this community, this is a small airport. it is basically in the backyard of a very dense community. it's a beach community. a lot of small houses. i have covered three different single plane accidents. one that was a small plane that crashed into a house. there's been a number of complaints. people on the golf course say the planes fly too close.

reporter andrew spencer spoke to people who saw what happened. >> reporter: actor harrison ford is no stranger to flying. >> not a bad way to spend the afternoon. >> reporter: but during his thursday afternoon flight something went wrong. ford's plane lost engine power forcing the 72-year-old to crash land before he could make it back to the santa monica airport. >> witnessed a small single- engine aircraft, came in lower than the aircraft typically does and descended below the tree line. >> it appears that he clipped the top of a tree and came to rest on the golf course. >> reporter: firefighters found ford in his plane on the penmar golf course. they say he suffered moderate injuries but he was conscious and alert when they loaded him into an ambulance and took him to a nearby hospital. >> for that golf course to be there was extremely fortuitous because i lived in los angeles for years and you sure can't land on the freeways. it's bumper to bumper and there's just not else there. >> reporter: ford was flying a 1942 military trainer. aviation experts say vintage planes like that one

paramedics tending to harrison ford on the fairway. startled golfers had just pulled him from the wreckage. >> we stabilized his spine and neck as best we could. and we were able to get him safely out of the plane and on to the ground. >> reporter: ford was piloting his vintage plane when the engine gave out. his familiar voice calling in to air traffic control. >> engine failure. immediate return. >> reporter: his desperate descent caught on tape by andrew varenhorst. >> engine splutter and cut out. >> reporter: the investigation, they say, will take a year to complete. but it appears ford's skill as a pilot, and dare i say his heroism, made this accident not being nearly as bad as it could have been. take a look at the aerial view. look how close the houses are. ford managed to land in the open space in the area, the golf course, clipping a tree and demolishing a tee box. >> he did his best to keep the airplane flying. there's not much you can do. rely on your good training and your piloting skills, which seem to have saved the day.
